Bible Note: Aw, Pastor Glenn! Quoting Fred Zaspel's conclusion without all the supporting argument is like having people for dinner and only putting chocolate frosting in front of them! Would one of your sermons stand solely on four sentences abstracted from it? ;-) Cessationism is frequently misunderstood (as we see demonstrated in this forum all the time). It's orthodox roots stem from the church's response to the Montanist heresy of the second century. It is discussed in detail from Chrysostom to Calvin. It isn't about "quenching the Spirit" or "limiting God." In orthodox Protestanism it is simply about sola scriptura. This is the advantage that Zaspel mentions (i.e., The scriptures, "the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience"). Well, Pastor, I'm reticent to jump in here with both feet. You might get Brother Ed to talk more about it. He's on the other side of the aisle on this issue, but from my perspective, he has a very balanced approach on the issue. A third approach might come from Emmaus, differing fundamentally from Ed and I. If we had any Quakers on the forum, we might even get a fourth point of view. In any event, I'd rather not quarrel. At this point, Zaspel states things well enough for me. In Him, Doc PS Sorry, Ed and Emmaus if I dragged you in on the topic if you didn't want in! PSS Okay... here are a couple more papers that might help... then I'll be quiet. :-) http://www.pastornet.net.au/rtc/cessatn.htm http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atlantis/5068/charismata/edgar.htm |
