AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Thessalonians 5:20 Do not scorn or reject gifts of prophecy or prophecies [spoken revelations--words of instruction or exhortation or warning]. |
Bible Question:
I just noticed that there are no notes on this verse: 1 Thessalonians 5 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. (NASB) 20 prophesyings despise not; (YLT) I have heard some say that it is bad to offer a "word of knowledge" or "prophetic word" to others concerning their life. As an example, someone may come to you and say "The Lord told me to tell you..." so and so. Is this wrong for them to do? If we refuse to listen, are we disobeying this scripture? Any Comments? Bible Answer: Verse 21 continues ... But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good ... Verse 21 cause me to think about other verses (Act 7:14, 1Co 14:29, 1Jn 4:1) ... we are not to accept whet is said at face value. Prophesy is one of the gifts (Rom 12:6; 1Co 12:10,28, 13:2,14; Eph 4:11). Looking at Deuteronomy 18, I read in verse 20, "But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die." The same principle is seen elsewhere (Due 13:1-5). If someone and came to me and said something like they had something from the Lord, I would ask if they are willing to accept the penalty if they were not 100 percent correct. I would point out the above passages if needed. If they said they are not under the Law (OT), I would say they may think that, but I would not agree. If they spoke and were not 100 percent correct, I would annouce what they said and the result to others with the NT principle of we should never listen to anything they say. Searcher |
