Bible Question:
I just noticed that there are no notes on this verse: 1 Thessalonians 5 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. (NASB) 20 prophesyings despise not; (YLT) I have heard some say that it is bad to offer a "word of knowledge" or "prophetic word" to others concerning their life. As an example, someone may come to you and say "The Lord told me to tell you..." so and so. Is this wrong for them to do? If we refuse to listen, are we disobeying this scripture? Any Comments? Bible Answer: Dear Pastor Glenn, As others of our esteemed members have argued this point from their presuppositional perspective, I hope you will forgive me for arguing it from mine. Owing, in general, to my reformation roots and, in particular, my cessationist certainties, I approach this question in a different manner. However, I couldn't express myself better than Fred Zaspel has in his series on spiritual gifts. The following specifically addresses your question, Pastor. If you read it, I'd encourage you to drop me a line to share your thoughts. http://www.biblicalstudies.com/bstudy/spiritualgifts/ch15.htm In Him, Doc |
