Subject: Does sin prove one is not a believer? |
Bible Note: Hi David, I noticed an error in my previous post. I had written "'Remaining faithful' is not a condition of salvation, it is a condition of salvation." What I meant to write was "'Remaining faithful' is not a condition of salvation, it is a description of salvation." Giving the fact of so many verses that make straightforward and outright claims that salvation cannot be undone, if there were a scripture that said that you could actually lose salvation, this would be a serious contradiction. There is not one scripture that catagorically states that you can lose salvation. 1 John 3:14 "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." Where is the scripture that states that having passed from death to life, we can pass back to death again? 1 John 5:10-13 "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." How can someone know that they have eternal life if tomorrow they don't? 1 Peter 1:23 “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” Regarding Phil. 2:12, we need to know what this verse actually is saying. As Brad brought out, you cannot look at this without the full sentence "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.", but I want to show you something that you will only see if you study this more closely. The Greek words that are translated "work" are not the same. "Work out (Gr. katergadzomai)your own salvation, for it is God which works (Gr. energeo) within you". This is how Jay Green translates this passage: "So, then, my beloved, even as you always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much rather in my absence, cultivate your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who is working in you both to will and to work for the sake of His good pleasure." (LITV) We can think of this as saying "perform your salvation, for it is God working in you". Others have given sound responses to statements in your post, that I have no need to add to. There is a place in scripture that speaks of those who stand in their own works, who rely on the results of their actions to save them. Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him who is sitting upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven did flee away, and place was not found for them; 12 and I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and scrolls were opened, and another scroll was opened, which is that of the life, and the dead were judged out of the things written in the scrolls--according to their works; 13 and the sea did give up those dead in it, and the death and the hades did give up the dead in them, and they were judged, each one according to their works; 14 and the death and the hades were cast to the lake of the fire--this is the second death; 15 and if any one was not found written in the scroll of the life, he was cast to the lake of the fire. Do youtruly wish to be judged according to your works? Love in Christ, Mark |
