NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:6 ¶ But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:6 ¶ Now, believers, if I come to you speaking in unknown tongues, how will I benefit you unless I also speak to you [clearly] either by revelation [revealing God's mystery], or by knowledge [teaching about God], or by prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people], or by instruction [teaching precepts that develop spiritual maturity]? |
Subject: Acts 2:2 |
Bible Note: 1Co 14:1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 1Co 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 1Co 14:3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 1Co 14:4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 1Co 14:5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. While Paul teaches that we should desire to prophesy more than we desire to speak in tongues, desiring to speak in tongues, as well as having the other spiritual gifts is also taught here. James wrote that we have not because we ask not. So ask God for whatever gift is in your heart to have, and if He wills, He will give it to you. 1Co 12:11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. Its God's choice. I'd rather prophesy! Love in Christ, Mark |
