Subject: searching for the truth |
Bible Note: Greetings EdB! When Scripture is silent and I need an answer, I will pray about it, search Scripture for any relevant principles, and consult with those I trust. Then, I will make my decision. Don't misunderstand, I have no problem with consulting others. But, I would say that even a group decision where Scripture is silent would not be binding upon me unless I was in a submissive relationship with them. For instance, lotteries are never mentioned in Scripture, but most denominations (including my own) have stands against them. In this case, I have willingly submitted to the restriction against lotteries, even though Scripture is silent on the issue. The difference that I have been trying to articulate is that I would never then turn around and tell everyone else that lotteries are sinful because my group doesn't do them. :-) So, to answer your questions, I would say that God would want us to seek wise counsel, but I have to answer to God, not many counselors. Secondly, I see the reformation as an attempt to correct theolgical wrongs. Sometimes, splits are necessary. For instance, if I were attending a church and discovered that they denied the Deity of Christ, I would leave. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
