Bible Note: EdB: I agree with you. Further, please consider the following: Many take the position that we ought not use the term "ask Jesus into your heart." They reason that strictly speaking that phrase does not appear in the Bible nor does it literally mean what the church world has used it to mean for more than 50 years. On the other hand it was recently pointed out that the term "lifted up," as used by Jesus when speaking of himself, designated the manner of death which he would die. The term spoke of death, death, death -- nothing else! Lifted up on the cross. It was further pointed out that Jesus' use of the term "lifted up" in Scripture does not refer to our lifting him up by drawing attention to him through our words and actions. It means that death on the cross will draw all men to Jesus. It does not mean that our efforts to witness (no matter how well intended) will draw all men to him. Such an idea may have scriptural support -- but not in this passage (John 12:32-33). Yet the reaction of most of those who replied to the post was, "Oh, well, that may not be what Jesus meant by the term (since the Bible comes right out and plainly says what Jesus meant), but this is what the church world has used it to mean. So, even though it's not scripturally correct, we still want to use it. What's wrong with that?" Is there not a plain contradiction here? Am I the only one that sees a double standard? (For further clarification of what Jesus did mean in John 12:32-33, I will re-post the original immediately after this post.) |
