Subject: what is the importance of tongues? |
Bible Note: Greetings Searcher! You wrote: "It is not for the benefit of the individual - it is for the benefit of the church (1 Cor 12-14)." Where exactly does Paul forbid the individual use or exercise of tongues? Paul definitely forbids the public use of it without an interpreter, but he also says: "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God." I definitely agree that the gift should be used properly. One of the problems Paul seems to have been addressing is the undue importance attached to this very public gift. But, no where does the text of Scripture say that it cannot benefit, or should not benefit, only the individual. I really believe that so much of the difficulty in discussing this particular issue is that both sides make so many unscriptural assumptions about it. We really need to stick to what Scripture actually says on this issue. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
