Subject: what is the importance of tongues? |
Bible Note: Greetings Prayon! It is good to hear from you my sister in Christ! It isn't so much that I disagree with the principles, but that the Scriptures used are sometimes stretched. :-) So, allow me to briefly touch upon each one with a few comments. :-) Allow me to quote your list so that readers won't have to go back and forth between the two posts. *************************************** 1) Tongues is the initial sign of being filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4) 2) Tongues for Spiritual edification (1Cor 14:4) 3) Tongues reminds us of the Spirit's Indwelling (John 14:16,17) 4) Tonues will keep our prayers in line with God's will (Rom 8:26) 5) Praying in Tongues stimulates faith (Jude 20) 6) Praying in tongues keeps us free from worldly contamination (1Cor 14:28) 7) Praying in tongues enables us to pray for the unknown. (Rom 8:26) 8) Praying in tongues gives us spiritual refreshing (Is 28:11,12) 9) Tongues for giving thanks (1Cor 14:15-17) 10) Speaking in tongues brings the tongue under submission (James 3:8) Hope this helps. **************************************** 1) I certainly would agree with this one. There is no 'one' Scripture that states this point, but there is a pretty convincing circumstantial case that can be made for it. 2) This one is clearly right on. 3) This one may certainly be true, but I don't see it in John 14. 4) This one could be inferred from this verse, but not everyone accepts that 'tongues' is being discussed here. I believe that it probably is, but it definitely isn't stated. 5) This one is a major stretch. :-) Even if tongues is the topic, which some won't accept, the text does not say, 'by praying'. Rather, it says, 'and pray'. So, it is not clear that praying in tongues builds faith, even if tongues is what is meant by 'praying in the Spirit'. 6) This one I didn't see at all. :-) Nothing is said about the effect of praying in tongues at all in this verse. 7) This one I would agree with, though not all would. 8) This one was totally out of context. The 'foreign lips' were a sign of judgement for those who were supposed to have peace and rest. This clearly isn't a promise of rest for those who speak in tongues. 9) This one is clearly Scriptural. 10) Alas, this last one escaped me as well! One could perhaps argue that, by implication, if one is praying in tongues then the tongue will only speak good things. However, there is nothing in this verse to indicate that praying in tongues would have any lasting effect upon the tongue. I hope this explains my comment! I certainly agree with the majority of what was said, especially in principle. I just don't think that the verses cited were always the right choice. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
