Subject: what is the importance of tongues? |
Bible Note: Greetings EdB! May I use you to mount my soapbox? :-) As most of you know, I am not a member of a pentecostal denomination, nor am I an experience over Scripture type of guy. :-) My concern over this topic is several fold: 1) First of all, there are simply too many unscriptural arguments made to disprove that the gifts in general are still for today. (For instances, MacArthurs attempt to distinguish between a singular fake 'glossa' and a 'plural' real 'glossa'.) 2) Secondly, that there is too much speculation done to disprove that the gifts are for today. See the many different views concerning 'when that which is perfect is come' for an example of this. 3) Thirdly, that there is too much spiritual arrogance on the part of both sides of the issue. Some would argue that those who don't speak in tongues aren't spiritual enough, while others would aruge that those who do speak in tongues aren't intellect enough! ;-) 4) Fourthly, and most importantly, I am afraid that the church is missing out on a boatload of very imporant spiritual weapons that could be used to accomplish ministry. People get caught up with tongues, but the Bible lists many different spiritual gifts. The church today relies so much on marketing techniques and human cleverness, when we should be relying upon the empowerment of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us as believers. Let's not allow Satan to rob us of highly effective offensive and defensive weapons! Oh well, I need to get off of the soapbox now! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
