Subject: Baptism...What does God's Word say? |
Bible Note: I am afraid that the situation with the theif on the cross can be abused when talking about baptism. We need to look at all of God's revelation. Is Baptism necessary to be saved? What does the Bible say? Matt 28:18-20 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, " All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 " Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." NASU Acts 2:38-41 Peter said to them, " Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, " Be saved from this perverse generation!" 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. NASU Acts 8:12-13 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. 13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. NASU Acts 8:36-39 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 37[ And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."] 38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. NASU 1 Peter 3:21-22 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him. NASU These are just a few of the many examples of people being born again into Jesus, buried with him in the waters of baptism, just as Paul talks about in Romans ch 6. Peter says that baptism saves, and not Peter, but the comforter who spoke through Peter. Jesus told them the comforter would come and teach them and remind them. How can we argue with the Bible? God's revealed Word tells to be Baptized, I for one am not going to argue with God. ps - all those examples compared to one theif on the cross, whom was next to Jesus who had all authority on earth as He hung there next to the thief... |
