Bible Note: Greetings Huron! May I interject? I tend to agree with Terrib on this issue. I believe that Jesus was setting up a contrast between physical birth and spiritual birth. It is obvious that Nicodemus understood Jesus' comments as a reference to physical birth since he asked if he had to enter his mother's womb a second time. So, in v. 5, Jesus is simply stating that both physical and spiritual birth are necessary. He is taking him beyond the physical if you will. This is further evidenced by v. 6. Jesus says that 'flesh give birth to flesh' (physical birth), and 'the Spirit gives birth to spirit' (spiritual birth). Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
