Bible Question: At the moment of conception, when the sperm meets the egg, it this when a soul, a human spirit is also formulated? Or is it at birth after nine months that a soul (human spirit) finally enters the body? I'm not talking about Adam, I understand that, I'm talking about now, at childbirth. |
Bible Answer: Dear Colton, This question has been deliberated much throughout history. In theology there are three reigning views relative to the origin of each individual soul: 1. Creationism This is the view that God creates a new soul for each person, depositing it in the body sometime between conception and birth. This perspective is the one generally held by most Evangelicals today. 2. Pre-existentianism This is the view that souls exist prior physical life, and that God deposits them in the body sometime between conception and birth. This perspective is generally held by Roman Catholics. 3. Traducianism This is the view that the soul is inherited from the parents in the same way that physical life is inherited from them. This perspective is generally held by Reformed believers -- e.g., Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc. Of the three views, pre-existentianism finds no biblical support. The other two views can be argued reasonably, to one degree or another, from the Scriptures. Personally, I tend toward traducianism (cf Hebrews 7:10; 1 Corinthians 15:45-49). In Him, Doc |
