Bible Note: Greetings Jaknik! I was in full agreement with you until the part about John explaining away why Christ didn't return when they expected and Luke's changes and embellishments! :-) Gospels, by their very nature, are histories told with a purpose. The purpose is evangelical. However, there simply isn't any evidence that any of the Gospel writers changed or embelished the message. The fact that the Gospels were not harmonized makes their historical value greater and also demonstrates the attitude which the early church had toward the Gospels. You keep mentioning the number of angels. Each account mentions different elements, which are complementary, not contradictory. Matt. 28:2 mentions an angel of the Lord who rolls away the stone before the tomb. None of the other Gospels mention this angel, they simply state that the stone had been rolled away. Mark 16:5 mentions a young man sitting in the tomb after the first group of women enter it. I'm assuming this was an angel, but the text never says that he was an angel. None of the other Gospels mention this young man. Luke 24:4 mentions two men standing by the group of women. None of the other Gospels mention these two men. John doesn't mention any angels at all. Now, where is the contradiction? Suppose I was reporting an accident and I made two statements about what I saw. In the first, I said that the north bound driver ran the red light and hit the west bound driver. In the second, I said that the west bound driver ran the red light and hit the west bound driver. These would be contradictory statements. However, suppose that I made two statements. In the first, I said that the north bound driver ran a red light and hit the west bound driver. In the second, I said that west bound driver tried to stop, but could not. These are not contradictory, but complimentory. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
