Subject: Bible's view on suicide? |
Bible Note: Tim Yes I believe mental illness can drive us to places we would never go on our own. However I think to blame all suicides on mental illness is just as wrong as blaming every other ill of society on mental illness. Since I'm not prone to murder, child abuse, or even suicide I can't imagine I would do any of those things unless I was mentally ill. However we know in our society there are people that place no premium on human life either their own or someone else's. Also we use mental illness to explain people’s actions we don’t agree with or understand, for instance I have relative that thinks I’m mentally ill for being a Christian. I’m sure there are instances of suicide where the person is not culpable because they were in fact out of their minds. However I find it equally hard to believe a rational person that was trusting in Christ would even consider suicide as an answer to their problem. I also have the question of being trapped in a burning building, would jumping possibly to your death be considered suicide when the only other option was to burn to death. I think since death is assured by doing nothing an attempt no matter how slim is just that an attempt not suicide. God is the final judge and non of us can really say how He is going to judge our actions. We have to keep our faith in Christ that He as our Mediator and High Priest will present us not as sinners guilty of sin but rather as joint heirs made righteous by His Blood. EdB |
