Subject: Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit |
Bible Note: Ray I don't think we are empowered by a 'holy' (lower case) spirit. If we were then in fact we would be moving in our own righteousness rather than the righteousness of Jesus imputed to us. Point 2 I see this many places in scripture put most clearly in 1 Cor. 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? Here is a list of other NT reference from Thompson Chain Reference John 14:17; John 14:23; Romans 5:5; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19; 1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Corinthians 14:25; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 2:22; Ephesians 4:6; Philippians 2:13; 2 Timothy 1:14; 1 Peter 1:11; 1 John 2:27; 1 John 4:12 Point 3 This passage is talking of our regeneration that occurs we were are reborn. This is promised many places, again a list from Thompson’s Jeremiah 32:39; Ezekiel 11:19; Ezekiel 36:26; John 1:13; John 3:3; John 3:5; John 3:8; 1 Corinthians 4:15; 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Corinthians 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 4:29; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:10; Titus 3:5; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 John 2:29; 1 John 3:9; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 5:1; 1 John 5:18 Perhaps John MacArthur’s words will explain it better. I will cleanse you. Along with the physical reality of a return to the Land, God pledged spiritual renewal: 1) cleansing from sin; 2) a new heart of the New Covenant (cf. Jer. 31:31–34); 3) a new spirit or disposition inclined to worship Him; and 4) His Spirit dwelling in them, enabling them to walk in obedience to His word. This has not happened, because Israel has not trusted Jesus Christ as Messiah and Savior, but it will before the kingdom of Messiah (cf. Zech. 12–14; Rom. 11:25–27; Rev. 11:13). MacArthur, J. J.
