Bible Note: Dear Matt, I actually wrote a reply to your prev. post but decided to erase it. The reason I did is because my answer contained mere human wisdom and I do not want to be found wise beyond that which is written. After all this is a Bible Study Forum and not a debating society. To get the full meaning of Prov. 23 31-35, we must also include vs. 29 and 30: Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine. In the same Chapter the father warns his son: Prov 23:20,21 "Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags." The point that the verses cited in chapt 23 are plain to see and they agree precisely with my own belief. DO NOT HANG OUT WITH DRUNKS OR PEOPLE WHO EAT LIKE PIGS OR FOLLOW THEIR WICKED EXAMPLE. STAYING HIGH ALL DAY WILL PUT YOU IN THE STREETS. (My paraphrase of vs 20,21) To believe that a glass ot two of wine, (even taken on an empty stomach!) will cause a person to experience that which is described in chapt.23 is to deny reality. You suggested we get real. That's cool, I'm all for it. But we must center our discussion around "What saith our Lord?". Peace and Grace, John Reformed |
