Subject: Why was his heart hardened? |
Bible Note: Hi Ebrain, Does not this verse say that the LORD will harden Pharaoh's heart? "And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go." Ex 4:21 Does not this verse say that the LORD hardened Pharoah's heart? "And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land." Ex 11:10 There are many places in Exodus where it says "Pharoah hardened his heart", and others where "the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart" Most of these use a word meaning, basically, heavy. He made his heart heavy, or as we say, hardened. In the passages I quoted above, where the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, the Hebrew means to strengthen, or confirm. Pharaoh hardened his heart, and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and the day came when the LORD confirmed Pharaoh's hard heart. Perhaps Pharaoh could have repented before that day came. But not after. Romans 9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH." 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. 19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?" 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? Pharaoh was not the only example of this. John 12:39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 "HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND PERCEIVE WITH THEIR HEART, AND BE CONVERTED AND I HEAL THEM." This is one of the hard teachings of the Bible, but nonetheless, it is the clear teaching of the Bible. Love in Christ, Mark |
