Bible Question: At Pentacost, they were speaking in tongues and everyone understood them in their own tongues. Does this not mean that when I hear people "babble" in church, that is not speaking in"Tongues" because no one understands what they are saying. |
Bible Answer: Hi Bill, I just found your post and welcome to the forum. The situation that occurred in Acts 2;3,4 where the apostles received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and it was accompanied by (glossolalia) i.e. Gentile tongues by which the Jews were to warned and evangelized. Glossolalia continued for forty years signaling the coming distruction of Jerusalem. The Lord spoke through Isaiah to warn of what was to come. Isaiah 28:11 (KJV) For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. The Jews always looked for a sign and this was to be a sing to warn them of what was to come. 1 Cor. 14:22 (KJV) Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. God was telling the Jews that he was turning to the Gentiles and the Jews would know when this was happening by the sign of tongues; the Jews would as a result be very jealous that they have been cut off and the Gentiles grafted in to the olive tree. It was a disgrace to the Jews to think that God would turn to the Gentile dogs. I hope this helps a little, CDBJ |
