3061 | How does Selah fit into 2 Tim 3:16? | Psalm | EdB | 9989
dmadden Shelah - "think about that". If we take that direction we will stop in our reading and think about, mediate on the scripture just proceding this point. Many times I have done this and God through his wonderful Holy Spirit has opened in my mind the realities of what I had just read. They became more alive or expressive to me. Shelah! Be blessed Ed |

3062 | Did God Create Man Mortal? | Gen 1:26 | EdB | 9973
Lionstrong First let me say your response is excellent, one of the best on this forum on any subject. I think some others need to rethink their opinion of you. Let me take this point by point. Your Point 1 Purpose of the Tree of Life Fact There is a Tree of Life. Theory 1. If man could eat of the Tree of Life and live forever, then wouldn’t we have to conclude the Tree of Life could remove the curse of sin, provided physical death was the curse? 2. Why did God make a Tree of Life and why do we see it again in Revelation and through all eternity? Could it be man in an immortal body needs it for life? 3. Does God do anything for no purpose? Fact God told Adam he would die, Adam understood that. Theory 1. Adam understood death because he had seen it. 2. When Eve ate of the tree she didn’t die physically, was Adam surprised or did he understand the death of the curse to be spiritual? Fact Adam and Eve eat of the tree of good and evil. They did not die physically but rather spiritually. Tree of life would have kept them alive physically. Theory 1. Curse of sin was strictly speaking of spiritual death and that is exactly what occurred. Physical death came about because they no longer had access to the tree of Life. Your point 2 Man’s mortality Fact Man is mortal Theory 1. Was man created this way? I can’t say for sure but I think yes. 2. Notice no where does it say man put on mortality, no where does it say man went through any kind of process. Fact For man to become immortal he has to be transformed. The bible uses the words “put on”, “changed’, “transformed”. However none of these words are used or implied in relation to man and mortality at the fall. All references you show under point 2 in reference to death could and do pertain to spiritual death, and since physical death did result it also can and should be included. That is not to say it is part of the curse but rather a result of the curse. Point Three Sin’s penalty At salvation what takes place? We become alive spiritually for eternity. We are still going to die physically but one day we will put on incorruptible. Hasn’t happened yet but will one day. 1 Cor. 15:53-54 For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. [54] But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory. Jesus’ substitutionary work on the cross involves more than physically dying so we wouldn’t, since we still do. Jesus was a substitute for the sin offering, it was His blood poured out in a covenant between Father and Son, it was the perfect sacrifice, it was buying us for a price, it was becoming sin as the perfect scapegoat, it was giving himself for us, he was the Passover lamb. All of which speak of sin and spirituality rather than something tangible and physical. Your 1 Peter 3:18 reference rather than making your point confirms to me what I’m saying. Fact because of sin man died spiritual and also physically. Jesus provided a way for both of those to be reversed. I focus on the spiritual since that is eternal and to me far more meaningful than the temporal life here on earth. My spiritual well being is far more important to me than my physical well being. I think far too much emphasis in the church today is placed on the physical rather than the spiritual and to me that down plays what Christ did on the cross. Be Blessed my Brother Ed |

3063 | The author of Hebrews | Hebrews | EdB | 9917
Bobby W Another good question and one that has been discussed in the forum before you might want to do a search. There are many names given Paul, Barnabas, Luke Apollos, Silvanus (Silas), Phillip, Clement of Rome and even Priscilla. I like what the third century theologian Origen said, "Who it was that really wrote the Epistle, God only know." |

3064 | We are on the same page | John 9:3 | EdB | 9905
Terry Absolutely God uses our weaknesses 1 Cor. 1:26-31 For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; [27] but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, [28] and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, [29] so that no man may boast before God. [30] But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, [31] so that, just as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord." Many times it is our abilites and talents that get in the way. We think we can do it without God. Jesus told us in John 15:5 that we can do nothing without him. "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. You also asked did God create (excuse me had a hand in creating) our weaknesses I submit to you Exodus 4:11 The Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Be Blessed and be a Blessing Ed |

3065 | Christ entered the Holy or most Holy?... | Heb 9:12 | EdB | 9901
Hi Jerry Good question! Actually Jesus entered both, the Holy place is before the Holy of Holies and must be pass through to reach the Holy of Holies. The Altar upon which Jeus presented His blood was located in the Holy of Holies so we know he entered both. Hebrews 9:11-14 |

3066 | Result of sin physical or spiritual? | Gen 3:22 | EdB | 9751
Lionstrong you say, “God is not Platonic such that he is only concerned about the soul … He created Man body and soul; He will redeem man through Christ body and soul.” Your right I’m not saying God only focuses on our spirt, however I really believe God is more interested in our eternal state rather than our physical state. Man on the other hand focuses on temporal instead of eternal. If man lives hundred years that is nothing compared to eternity. If God heals a man of cancer and the man live another 25 years Praise God, but the miracle still dies after 25 years. If God saves a man that miracle lives for eternity. Praise God! God has said man’s physical life is but a wisp of smoke in relation to time. However man’s spirit life is eternal. Even the pit of fire and brimstone is for ever and ever. I believe God cares more about where we are going to spend eternity than he does about this our physical life. I believe God sent his only begotten Son Jesus to die for eternal well being not our physical well being. I will say that Jesus’ death did effect our physical well being in that we no longer are faced with the eternal separation from God. Also now that we are back in relationship with God we can ask for and expect to receive help in our physical situation. Again I give this verse it to me says it all Romans 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. |

3067 | Result of sin physical or spiritual? | Gen 3:22 | EdB | 9743
Lionstrong You jumped in here in the middle have you read the beginning of this thread? This thread begins with a discussion on the Tree of Life and its purpose. It was concluded that evidently man did not possess eternal life but needed to eat from the tree of life to sustain life. That may or may not be a valid assumption but I believe it is valid, why else the tree of life? Also Revelations chapter 19 infers that the tree of life will once again be available to man and it produces different fruit monthly again an indication that man must continually eat of it. What took place in the garden. First God warned Adam do not eat of the tree of good and evil or you will die Gen. 2:17. Unless Adam had an understanding of death the threat of death to Adam would have no meaning. That opens speculation that Adam may have seen death before. Maybe not, but let’s move on. Gen. 3:1-5 Satan then comes into the garden in the form of a serpent and tempts Eve with 3 things; lust of the eye, lust of the flesh, and pride of life. All of which Eve sees being satisfied in the forbidden fruit Gen 3:6a. So she takes and eats, does not die before Adam so he eats Gen3:6b. What transpired? Adam and Eve had once walked with God and were in perfect relationship with Him. Now all of the sudden they are afraid, ashamed and hiding. They had broken relationship with God and were dead spiritually. God had warned them they would die and die they did, instantly at this point. Now look at the curse of sin Gen. 3:14-20 nothing about death except Gen 3:19 which says rather expectedly, you will work until you die. Almost as if Adam accepted death to be a natural conclusion to life. Now look at God’s words in Gen 3:22 If man stays in the garden and around this tree of life and eats of it he will live forever he must be put out. And man was thrown out of the garden. We do not know Adam’s age at this time so we don’t know how long he lived after this just that he lived until the age of 930 years. From this I think we have to ask. 1. What was the purpose of the tree of life? Evidently to sustain life. 2. What occurred after they ate in the garden? They die spiritually. 3. Was death mentioned in the curse Gen 3:14-20? No just in passing. :-) (no pun intended) 4. What would have prevented physical death? Evidently the Tree of Life. 5. Do we believe the Tree of Life could remove the curse of sin? No only Jesus the Lamb of God could do that. 6. Has everyone sinned? Yes Romans 3:23 7. Has everyone died physically? No Enoch and Elijah have not. 8. Did the curse of sin carry physical death? No it carried spiritual death, physical death resulted because men no longer had access to the Tree of Life. 9. What did Jesus’ death on the cross do? Removed the curse of sin. Gospels 10. What main thing took place? We became alive spiritually once again, we had relationship with the father. Gal 3:29 11. Did Jesus’ death on the cross prevent man from physically dying? No Heb. 9:27 12. What keeps man alive eternally? Evidently the Tree of Life Rev 19 For these twelve reasons I believe sin did not cause physical death but rather physical death resulted because sin separated man from God and the Tree of Life. To me this verse says it all! Romans 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. |

3068 | Is God so shortsighted? | 1 Tim 2:11 | EdB | 9438
Let me redo this. First I wrongly included JVH0212's response as a yes to my question. JVH0212's response was placing historical data in right perspective with Biblical. However if I'm not mistaken Morgan61 you feel that Bible does lack the some of the information we need to make a correct doctrinal decision. That we need to consider outside information before we can come to an answer. Is that your position? |

3069 | 2,000 or 3,000 baths? | 1 Kin 7:26 | EdB | 9336
Good Answers! Ritual Jewish cleansing had to be from a "flowing" water source. 1 Kings 7:26 describes the Laver and the volume of water it could contain. 2 Chr. 4:5 is believed to be describing the whole system and the amount of water it contained. We know the laver feed ten vessels and quite probably the laver itself was feed from a source and all of this together made up the difference. |

3070 | Did David or Elhanan kill Goliath? | 2 Sam 21:19 | EdB | 9276
Nolan yours and Prayon's answers are quite right but I think this says it most clearly. From the Book "When Critices Ask" ask by Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe publisher Victor Press, pg. 176 'The 2 Samuel text is probably a scribal error in copying the manuscripts and should read "Elhanan... slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite." This conculsion is supported by a parallel report of the story in 1 Chronicles 20:5 which has the missing highlighted phrase "Lahmi the brother of," thus showing it was the brother of Goliath that Elhanan killed and not Goliath, whom David slew just as 1 Samuael 17 reports.' |

3071 | What is an ASHERAH POLE? | 2 Chr 24:18 | EdB | 8534
Asherah was the pagan goddess of fertility, some say she was Baal’s mother others say she was his consort. In any case the people that worshipped the pagan god Baal also worshipped Asherah. The term Asherah pole defines something similar to a Native American totem pole. In other words it was a log or tree trunk that was carved with the image of Asherah. Often this was very crude and many times the tree limbs were utilized to form arms and legs with the trunk given a general body shape. This form of idol worship caused the people of Israel many problems in their relationship with God as recorded in First and Second Kings. Where we see the unrighteous Kings setting up Asherah poles and altars and the righteous Kings tearing down the altar and using the Asherah pole as fire wood to totally desecrate the place. |

3073 | The Glory of Israel | Num 23:19 | EdB | 8232
I beleive in both of these it is saying God is not a Human. I like the NLT for both of these 1 Samuel 15:29 NLT And he who is the Glory of Israel will not lie, nor will he change his mind, for he is not human that he should change his mind!" Numbers 23:19 NLT God is not a man, that he should lie. He is not a human, that he should change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? So I would say in both of these it should be small capitalization. |

Radioman of course I accept your apology. I accepted it when you first gave it and I thought I responded to either in the forum or by E-mail. If not please forgive that oversight on my part. I look forward to sharing that moment with you my brother. Be blessed and be a blessing |

3075 | EdB, Did He die on Thursday? | John 19:31 | EdB | 8088
Steve I agree, you are right on. I believe the confusion comes over the term Sabbath. I believe it was assumed to mean the weekly sabbath rather than the Passover Sabbath. For Jesus to be crucified on the Friday (Passover) the Jews would have had to violate the Passover Sabbath, that day carries the same restrictions as a weekly Sabbath. Further more Jesus would not have been able to fulfill the Passover Lamb requirement, as the Passover Lamb is to be killed at or before twilight of begining of the Passover calendar day or 6:00 pm Thrusday. I think there is also confusion over Jesus celebrating Passover the night before. There are two ways around that. First some Jews climbed to the highest place on the temple to spot the new moon (the begining of the month) others would wait until they could see it from the entrance to temple. This resulted in a day's difference. So many times Passover was celebrated two days. One for the early crowd (they were sure they were right) and once for the Orthodox crowd (they were sure they were right). The other solution the Jews made an exception clause to passover day, if one was traveling or had important business they could and often did celebrate Passover a day early. This also played into how they choose which way to spot the moon. |

3076 | Do W-F Twist The Bible? Acts 17:11 | John 10:27 | EdB | 7933
While some of this teaching is Word of Faith not all of it is. Some of it is just junk invented to keep the ball rolling as it were, to provide fresh “rhema” word, new revelation to the audience that had developed an appetite for such. None of these guys would be doing this if there was no listeners, no one to support their junk. No one in the church world is calling them to task. The only organization that has said anything I know of is Christian Research Institute and everyone is against them. Our friend Hank in an earlier response said he hadn’t even heard of Word of Faith before now. Word of Faith claims millions in their membership that is a number too big to be ignored. We fail to take action because we don’t want to cast the first stone (maybe we need to get our lives under the blood so we are without sin). We are afraid of slandering another Christian, we feel a man’s personal life is just that, and we don’t expect a higher standard for our teachers, preachers and pastors. What does the world see? They see a church that is racked with sin, corruption, and all forms of immorality. They see a church that let’s men who are obviously in it for the money unashamedly demanding money from deceived and in some cases feeble minded believers and they are getting it to the tune of billions each year. Look at Paul he wasn’t afraid to call a bum and bum II Tim 4:14. |

3078 | Is the Word-Faith movement biblical ? | John 10:27 | EdB | 7871
This is getting messy. Let’s separate Word of Faith from valid Christianity. Word of Faith borders on the metaphysical, in that they teach nothing becomes anything until it is spoken. Hence if your sick and you refuse to say your sick you will not be sick. If your car blows up it is only a false manifestation from Satan to defeat you and the car is not really blown up until after you say my car just blew up. They base this on the teachings of F.F. Bosworth and E. W. Kenyon. Kenyon in particular and Bosworth both daubled in the metaphysical before advancing their thoughts on the Christian world. Kenneth Hagin then developed their teaching into what I would call the Word of Faith movement. He claimed never to be sick because he would never allow the false manifestation of sickness brought on by Satan to become real by his voicing of them. In other words if your leg falls off it really didn’t fall off it is just an illusion of Satan to get you to confess your leg just fell off. Neat huh! Then they add to all this mix the fact that God wants you healthy, wealthy and just down right peachy. The only way any problems can come into your life is if you allow them by failing to speak positively or speak something negative into being. Then to sort of cinch it all down they say the only two things that can block your positive confession is the lack of faith or unconfessed sin. Therefore if anything bad does happen to you they always have an out. Either you lack faith or are a sinner. Kind of like catch 22. Your leg falls off, you can’t move, but you can’t call for help because if you say your leg fell off it really will. And since you can't confess it back on your either in sin or you lack mountain moving faith. This all works really well for headaches and such but when a real disaster comes into your life you pretty much look like a fool standing there saying my child didn’t died, it’s all a false manifestation of Satan, while they are throwing dirt on your child’s coffin. Then as you walk away from the cemetery your fellow church members whisper amongst themselves that child would have lived if only you had more faith or would have confessed the sin that was in your life preventing God from moving. This does happen folks! This is not to say God does not heal today, this is not to say God is not in the miracle working business, nor is this to say we shouldn’t have a positive outlook. What I am saying is we have to have our faith in God not in what we speak. |

3079 | You answer one question with 3 more? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 7825
Here I go walking where angels fear to tread, between JVH0212 and Lionstrong :-). Let’s defend or attack dispensationalism on something other than Dr. Scofield. Dr. Scofield’s life pretty much attests to the fact he wasn’t real interested in some of the 10 commandments (not that mine is so much better). In fact it was to his best interest to go with dispensationalism. I think the question here needs to be asked was dispensationalism as presented by Dr Scofiled true or was it convenient? Being a dispensationalist myself I have a keen interest in the answer. |

3080 | Is the Word-Faith movement biblical ? | John 10:27 | EdB | 7820
I too have been a part of the Word of Faith movement and I agree wholeheartedly with Mark’s advice, “move on”. Your own observations of the Word of Faith are right on. They have a formula on how to get God to perform according to their will. Never once do they allow God to be sovereign. By their teaching God is at our beck and call and He must perform according to a set standard. Two excellent books on the subject are “Christianity in Crisis” and “Counterfeit Revival” both are written by Hank Hanegraaff. Anybody that has not read those books and are in the Word of Faith movement are doing themselves and truth a big disservice. These books will open your eyes to the things that are going on behind the scenes that have been hidden from you. Things like “big names” going out the country to get medical treatment so they aren't discovered. The same people that are telling you to have faith for a healing because God HAS to perform. |
