3041 | I ask you a loving challenging question | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10539
I’m sorry I keep forgetting my audience here and assume everyone is on the same page. There are actually two forms/purposes of tongues. The first and primary is our prayer language used when the Holy Spirit is praying through us. this is used to edify the believer. The second the Gift of tongues used within the church along with interpretation as a sign to the unbeliever. When we yield or as many want to say when we are infilled with the Holy Spirit (that is incorrect terminology as explained elsewhere in this thread) we are given a prayer language or tongue. When God wants to move upon and unbeliever He manifests the gifts of tongues in a yielded person, with interpretation in same or another yielded person as sign to the unbeliever. Two different things. Why is there so much focus on tongues? One word attention! People in the flesh want attention and use outburst of tongues to get it. It is these abuses I also discussed elsewhere in this thread. |

3042 | reference to spilling seed on ground | Gen 38:9 | EdB | 10529
Sorry I meant to append this to this branch instead of the one I first did. I had a Catholic friend that always said this as a argument against masturbation. It is not in the Bible so I suspect it is either in the Catholic Apocrypha or is part of church teaching. I have searched the apocrypha in the RSV without finding it so it must be only in the Catholic form if it there at all. |

3043 | What does it mean to believe. . . ? | John 3:16 | EdB | 10423
Some one gave the answer as follows: “The word "believe" here is from the Greek word "pisteuo". It is used 109 times in the New Testament(KJV).It means to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by implication, to entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ)" Technically this is right but does not express the real menaing of this word. "Pisteuo" means to be dependant upon. To stake your life on this belief. The Apostles set the example and lived a life the shows the true meaning of this word. Each and everyone of the Apostles was willing to die unquestioningly for what they held to be true. That is believing in Christ. Doing or saying anything less cheapens the meaning of the word. Ed |

3044 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10365
Appleseed I believe the teaching on the Holy spirit is some of the most mis-explained teaching there is. When you are saved you receive the Holy Spirit, your full, there is nothing else. God doesn’t hold back some to see if you will ask for it, He gives it all totally and completely. The Holy Spirit doesn't come in pieces. If and when you are exposed to the seeking the gifts, then you will learn to yield to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is in you he dwells there, but until you yield he can’t use you. One of the first things that happen when you yield is you start to talk in tongues. When this happens many Pentecostals called this being “filled” as if more was given, nothing more was given. The person just yielded to what he already had. The Holy Spirit if you remain yielded will use you in other manifestations of the Holy Spirit such as healing or prophecy or works of wisdom. However the Holy Spirit only moves in these other gifts as they are needed and many times a person is not yielded or gift not needed therefore we do not see that gift in that person. Everybody that is saved has a full measure of the Holy Spirit, whether they use it or not depends on what teaching they have been exposed to and whether they choose to yield their will to another, the Holy Spirit. When you talk in tongues you not “more saved”, you can’t get “more saved”. You are just able to yield your will to the Holy Spirit and allow him to minister through you. I hope this helps Ed |

3045 | Would you of tried to stop His execution | John 19:23 | EdB | 10199
Steve you know the bridge operator story is a made up story. Secondly it is a lousy example of what happened at the cross! Jesus allowed himself to crucified out of obedience to the Father. Jesus being God understood perfectly what had to be done to pay the price for sin and he willingly paid it. No one took His live! Jesus knowing no man would be capable of making the decision you pose would never allow that situation to develop. Ed |

3046 | Could you nail Him to the cross? | John 19:23 | EdB | 10101
Steve I do not believe God would have put someone into the position of your fictitious Roman Julius. Even Judas did not understand what he was doing until after the fact, and the reality of it drove him to commit suicide. There is no way I could humanly handle the tension between nailing Jesus to the cross or not allowing Him to render sin defeated. It would overcome any lesser human than Jesus himself. Even then Jesus sweat blood as he agonized His decision of that event. |

3047 | Excommunication applicable for today? | Matt 18:17 | EdB | 10062
Nolan Look if you don't want to talk to me okay, just say so, you don't have to excommunicate me! ;-) To answer your question yes Excommunication is applicable for today, but I think its effectiveness has been severely weakened. At one time people were known but what church they attended, it was a describing quality about them, they carried it with pride. Today it has moved to material objects. When I was a young (in the dark ages) a man was described by, “you know Nolan he attends the Brethren church, the nice guy you know Nolan” Later it became, “you know Nolan he has those three fine young boys that run around here and that lovely wife.” To day it is, “you know Nolan he drives that sharp Yugo” :-0 I think to excommunicate someone from the church today would have little effect on most. In fact it would probably end up causing a church split. |

3049 | Will my wife and I know one another? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 10044
We are brothers and sisters in Christ and I believe that is how we will know each other. Our love for one another will no longer be as man for woman, nor will it be as friends but I think it will be a godly love with no favorites no special friends. Remember we will be in the presence of God never to be alone again, we won’t need someone else to share our experiences with as God will constantly be with us. Reminds me of an old favorite song, In the Garden. “We will walk with Him and talk with Him and tell Him of our love” God will consume us and nothing else will matter except God and His presence around us. You may recognize you wife but the things of heaven will far eclipse any earthly relationship.
3050 | Bib Ref on weapons of war today being OK | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 10041
I pray that debate stays at yahoo! I personally believe we must be willing to defend our country and to do that requires weapons. Yet the Quakers (which I respect very much) and those of that mindset say that is wrong. We know Jesus' disciples carried swords, yet Jesus taught to love our enemies. War is a result of sin and Jesus came to set us free of sin. I can think of no good purpose for war or anyway war had benefited man. Yet without some wars, in which brave men and women gave their lives for freedom I probably not be able to sit here and write this. War is distasteful at best and horrific at worst and it would serve no purpose to sit here and try to defend it. Nor would trying to find some passage in the Bible to defend or oppose it. War is a shame to mankind brought by sin and one day will no longer exist. Let us let the debate remain in Yahoo! Peace to all men Ed |

3051 | WHAT WAS HIS STATE OF MIND | Psalm | EdB | 10040
There is a very interesting book written by Phillip Keller called, "A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23" published by Inspiration Press. It gives you a feeling of Psalm 23 from both the sheep and their shepherd's point of view, written by a man that studied both for years. The aspects of a shepherd's life combined with natural actions of sheep the author brings up makes Psalm 23 explode before your eyes. I would recommend reading this book by anyone that had an interest in understanding David and Psalm 23 better. One point I hold onto to is where the author was discussing verse 4 "Yea though I walk through the valley...", the author said, "a good shepard will never take his flock where he had not already been before. The good shepherd goes on ahead to insure safe passage of his sheep." What a wonderful truth! Be blessed and be a blessing Ed |

3052 | Who is responsible for Jesus' death? | John 19:23 | EdB | 10020
Who is responsible for Jesus' death. Sin! But ultimately Everyone, that calls upon the name of Who is responsible for Jesus' death. Sin! But ultimately Everyone, that calls upon the name of Jesus for salvation. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 10:15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. |

3054 | What separates Evangelicals, Catholics? | Rom 3:28 | EdB | 10013
There is one separation between Catholics and Evangelicals that we don’t consider here in the US. Talk to any Evangelical from a Latin American or South American Country and you will find real bitterness over persecution brought by Catholics. In many of these countries Catholics are behind much if not all of the persecution Evangelicals face. I know a Cuban pastor that was ran ragged by Catholics in Cuba before Castro finally ran him out. He claimed they went as far as killing people. I had a professor that was kind of like a Spanish Billy Graham holding rallies for 38,000 nightly. His effort were thwarted in many countries by Catholics. Catholics have prevented his programs from being broadcast over the radio. He actually had stadium permits revoked just an hour before a meeting on the command of a Catholic bishop. However God turned that around and they ended up having the rally in front of the Bishops residence (unintentionally) with over 38,000 blocking the streets. To God be the Glory.
3055 | Steve | Titus 3:9 | EdB | 10001
Steve was a "passer through" I suspect and will probably not see this response. That and the fact RCSCROLL’s remarks is a little terse I will remove this from the question list. By the way I think Adam would be alive today also. See my response later in the thread for a question to you. |

3056 | Hi Tim | Revelation | EdB | 9999
Hi I'm going to jump in here. Well we know that there is going to be 144,000 servants of God that goes through some part of the tribulation. We also know there are others that do not take the mark of the beast and are killed. Most consider them as saved. Many feel the saints under the altar in Rev. 6:9 are people that were saved during the tribulation and lost their lives. The references 1 Thess 1:10 and 1 Thess 5:9 on the “wrath” you mentioned are explained like this, many feel God’s wrath begins at the mid point of the tribulation and at this point every believer has either been raptured or killed and no new ones come into being. Others feel the “us” of those verses mean people that were saved before the rapture. They view the necessity of going through the tribulation as the penalty for not accepting Jesus sooner. Personally I favor the former, God’s wrath doesn’t take place until mid trib and by that point any believer has either been raptured, killed or martyred. In any case I see no believer making it through the Tribulation. Is this what your asking? Ed |

3058 | Explain Job 22: 21 through 27 | Job 22:21 | EdB | 9996
Blessed of my Father Nolan has answered you what are you looking for? Job 22:21-27 basically says repent, look not unto the things of this world, and you will find true wealth. What more are you looking for? Do you see something you want to bring out? Why do you keep asking about this passage? Ed |

3059 | How to know calling in your life? | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 9994
Record what you think God is showing you. Does it in fact come to pass? I don't think there are to many prophets today in the sense of Old Testament prophets. Why? Because each one of us has the Holy Spirit to guide us to the truth. That is not to say there are no prophecy. I see God using people to bring confirmation to someone or possibly even direction (if the person refused to heed the Holy Spirit) without them becoming “prophets”. I see many so called prophets today give messages such as, “The sky is blue, the grass green and God loves you”. These are nice, but to what end? If someone is going to prophesize their message should be noted and witnessed if it came to past or not. If not then they are not a prophet of the Lord |

3060 | What separates Evangelicals, Catholics? | Rom 3:28 | EdB | 9992
I think there is another major point. Catholics tend to beleive Mary lived and died a virgin yet Mark 6:3 tells us the names of Jesus' brothers and that he had sisters. ""Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" ..." Also Matthew 13:55-56 "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? [56] "And His sisters, are they not all with us? ..." So we see Mary had many other children after she had Jesus. An Important point must be stressed here; Mary was in fact a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus let us not forget that! Also Catholics revere Mary and look to her to intercede for them. Evangelicals hold no need for anyone to intercede since they accept their position as adopted into the family, able to call God Abba Father |
