261 | Nazirite ... immaculate conception??? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 104950
It was my belief that saying " ...immaculate conception" then adding " ? " would fully poise the question. I will certianly try to be more mindfull of the veiwers ablity to contemplate an abreviated question. This forum would be a more suitable study tool if it were not so contentious. Joel while you try to be more mindfull (sp) of the veiwers(sp) ablity (sp) to contemplate an abreviated (sp) question. You might also consider a “good” question addresses one of the 5 “w’s” and one H. “Who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, “why” and “how”. In your “abbreviated” question, “Nazirite ... immaculate conception???”, there is little hint which ‘W’ or ‘H’ you were asking. So we the readers are left with, was Joel asking Who was a Nazirite, What is a Nazirite., Where are Nazirites from, When do they become Nazirites, or How does one become a Nazirite? Then you appended Immaculate conception so we are left to guess is this two questions, Who was born by immaculate conception, Where is immaculate conception found in the Bible / Where did immaculate conception take place, What is immaculate conception, Why was there immaculate conception, When did immaculate conception take place or How did immaculate conception take place? However if you weren’t asking two quesitons then we are left to try to figure out what you were asking. Since Jesus was the only one ever immaculately conceived one would guess you were asking was Jesus a Nazirite, Why Jesus was a Nazirite, Where was Jesus a Nazirite, When was Jesus a Nazirite, or How was Jesus a Nazirite. Searcher56 rather than answering all your questions simply said Jesus was a Nazarene not a Nazirite and what exactly is your question. So Joel be gentle with us and, help us that aren’t as swift, state your questions fully and understandably and we will do whatever we can to help you to an answer. In all respect and love. EdB |

Joel Now see I thought it abrasive when you said, "I will certianly try to be more mindfull of the veiwers ablity to contemplate an abreviated question. This forum would be a more suitable study tool if it were not so contentious." I read this as you were saying some people aren't smart enough, swift enough, or hip enough to figure out your abbreviated question. I was trying to show there was many ways to take that question and that Searcher56 in a effort to be as helpful as possible answered what he thought the question might be. He then asked if this wasn’t your question would you please restate it so we could understand. You then challenged him and said why did you take my question of the list if you weren’t able to answer it. I interjected that the problem was searcher56 couldn’t understand it. At which point you wrote the above. To me you asked an un-understandable question when asked to restate it you took offense and struck out at searcher56 I then wrote what I did to show you the hard time we were having understanding what you were asking. If that is abrasive to you I’m sorry. As for using your lack of formal education as reason, I’m also sorry but that is not excuse for not making an effort to improve yourself so you can ask complete questions. The fact your on the internet shows you have the means to an education. You can learn most anything you want on the internet and basic English not being the least of them. Again I’m sorry your hurt and insulted but don’t try to turn this around on me or Searcher56. We were merely trying to find out what your question was when you turned ugly. EdB |

Larry I agree if people are getting saved, however the real question then becomes are they getting saved? Many are being filled with feel good, ego building messages that leaves little room for repentance and humility. In fact sin and the fact they are sinners in need of salvation is rarely mentioned. So if their getting saved I ask from what, the bad opinion they had of themselves when they walked in? Two Sundays ago I listened to a man preach his whole message on you don't have to change to be a Christian. I was in shock and even more so as I left hearing people commenting on how wonderful the message was. He preached in a very upbeat dynamic way, letting his fantastic personalilty be seen and by this won the people's approval not with the truth but with his delivery. People were drawn to what he said, as he painted them as being God's perfect children. However he forgot one thing they are not born that way, but become God's perfect children only if they are cleansed by nothing less than the precious blood of Christ. That point was totally absent from his message. EdB |

Hank That is interesting, in most cases where Jesus isn't being preached the church is the fastest growing church. I know in the area I live if you preach Jesus the church seems to grow agonizingly slow if at all, but preach what the people want to hear and it will grow by leaps and bounds. In fact I know one church where the preacher preaches a different show each week, in fact he even preached with a python around his neck one time, and his church is growing. I have a very dear friend that is most excellent and preaches nothing but the word of God and his church is on the verge of collapse. EdB |

denim Welcome to the forum and as a fellow Floridian welcome to Florida. Where abouts are you? I'm in the Tampa Bay area. I'm told by many ‘respected’ "experts" Florida is the hardest state in the nation for Christianity, and that the Tampa Bay area is the hardest within the state. Your right we see just about everything that can be imagined here in this state. One church I know even had a magician making the pastor appear and disappear during service on Easter Sunday, it that doesn’t rattle your boots nothing will. Every year we see more and more pastors getting the “call” to minister in Florida. It seems the call usually comes about mid winter to pastors in Michigan, New York, New England, you get the idea. While I would never think of questioning ones "call" :-) that might explain the caliber of preaching you are exposed to here. Keep looking there are some excellent churches with men dedicated and totally sold out for the Lord. Let me know your general area I may be able to direct you to a good church. EdB |

mommapbs Glad to hear your chimes got rang. :-) I can't agree enough. These verses Acts 2:47; 5:14; 11:24 which to me imply the people were first saved then added to the church and they were first saved by people going out to the market and meeting places. You are also very right on your comment about the lack of discipleship within the church, Ephesians 4:11-12 clearly states the mission of the church. It is not programs, buildings, fine preaching, or many of the other things we see the church doing today. The Churches total charge is to make disciples teaching and equipping them to do the work of the Lord. In case anyone has forgotten the work of the Lord is seen in Matthew 28:19-20 and Acts 1:8. Without discipleship the churches are producing shallow, self centered, what’s in for me Christians. If the trend doesn’t change soon the world will have every right to point to what we call church and say why would I want to be a part of that? The problem starts at the leadership. People that look for a way to measure success and determine it must mean building size, congregation size, ministerial salary, and care nothing about the spiritual wellbeing of those placed in they charge. The problems flows from the top right down to the congregation where people resist making commitments, spend time praying and studying God’s word, seeking instead only to have their felt needs met. We have become of a nation of very shallow people, going to very shallow churches, pastored by very shallow men, lead by very shallow leaders. All who look for their felts needs to be met rather than becoming servants to a living God. Thud!! That was me jumping off my soap box. :-) EdB |

Tim Let me ask you a question that was asked of me and one that I wrestle with. How many disciples have you made? How many are being made in the church you attend? I think that answer is clearly not enough, I don't care if it is a growing church or one in decline the fact of the matter too few true disciples are being made. Your right there are churches growing and they are not all shallow, however I wonder if the same effort that was applied to make the church grow was applied in making disciples, how the numbers would change? Would we see big churches or more sold out Christians. Incidently the numbers on actual church growth shows basically the churches have been trading people back in forth for the last 24 years. Experts that interpret those numbers tells us the church that is growing is actually drawing people from other churches, every few new converts are being made and even less disciples. Take a census in your own church and see where the people are coming from. Be blessed my brother. EdB |

Tim Was this disciple making or integrating new believers into the church? Most churches have classes for new "believers". In these classes the new people learn the "purpose" of church, learn they are needed as workers in the church, learn the reasons and need to tithe, significance of baptism and etc. Disciplining some one is more than basic Christianity for New Believers class (though that is a good start) it is reproducing ourselves in others. How many of these new believers or anyone for that matter has spent time with you as you; witnessed one on one to others, prayed for the needs of the church, for the salvation of others, how many went with you on hospital visitation, funerals, marriages, counseling sessions? Have they shared in your devotions, your personal prayer, have they seen you in your true relationship with God. Do you know where they are in Christ , not what they are doing in the church or on Sunday but how are they living day to day. Do you know what obstacles they are facing, problems they are dealing with, breakthroughs they have experienced. Do you have a close personal relationship with any and if so how many? How many of these people have turned off their TV and are out visiting and sharing Jesus instead of kicked back watching TV? How many could step into the pulpit and once past their early nervousness could bring forth the word in truth and victory? Tim I know nothing about Willow Creek Church or what they are doing in the area of disciple making, but I do question how you do the things I mentioned above to so many people and do it effectively. I wonder how many have ever sat down and even had a heart to heart conversation with “their” pastor. I wonder how many that will die while attending that church will have “their” pastor speak from his heart about them, what they did, accomplished for the Lord. If one of them is in the hospital can/will “their” pastor go and sit with the family until the crisis passes? Can he even walk into the room and know everyone without introducing himself to nearly everyone in the room? I used the term their pastor to say it doesn’t have to be the senior pastor himself just one of his disciples that is now a pastor. Most churches today want you saved, plugged in and attending and let the rest of the chips fall where they may. Most pastors are far to busy to even attempt to completely disciple a staff member let alone make disciples of the congregation. What we call church today is really nothing more than venue for the preacher to preach on Sunday. Everything else that takes place in the church is ancillary to the big event on Sunday morning. Where is the disciple making where is the relationship building, where is people getting turned on and sold out for Christ? EdB |

denim Wow Palm Coast that is a hard one. I know there is an a Assembly of God church there pastored by Terry Thomas. I don't know the man but that is a thought. If you don't mind traveling down to Port Orange I have a very good friend Tom Finken that is pastoring a new work Bethel Assembly they meet in the Horizon Elementary School. I never heard Tom preach but I have sat under his teaching and heard his heart in prayer many times so I know he is a faithful servant of the Lord's. EdB |

Tim Then let me state what your doing is the exception and not the rule. I also suspect the discipleship and mentoring you received is what influenced you to go into the ministry. Of course there is always a core group in every church the old 20 80 principal but as Mommapbs said she attends a church of 1000 and 5 or 6 show up for prayer. As for the Willow Creek church again I can not say what they are doing first hand but I have had experience with people coming out of a similar background. We knew one man that attended a rather large church with many home groups patterned directly off of Willow Creek. His son got into a little trouble and their attorney suggested that his pastor be present to offer character references. the family attended the church the 5 years regularly and the previous 3 years on and off. They had been in the home study program. The son attended both youth group and youth church. When the father went to the church to see the senior pastor he could not. As a side bar the father saw the pastor that very day out riding his Harley Hog motorcycle with his black leather vest that shows he is a "regular guy." He then asked the youth pastor to serve as reference. The youth pastor said he could not remember the son therefore could not stand for him. He went to the home group pastor and asked for his support we was turned down and told his home group leader was advised due to liability conflicts not to get involved. End result after attending 5 years solid and the 3 years previous to that on and off he could no one in the seeker church that would stand in court as a character witness of the son. I knew the boy an can say he was in fact a good kid. I'm I saying Willow creek and home groups are wrong no. But they aren't the panacea of the church that many make them to be. It takes disciple makers to disciple and make a group of committed individuals. I would guess if asked the same question to the clergy of this country, "Are you making disciples?" An honest answer would result in less than 5 percent saying yes. The "experts" tell us that since 76 the church has not grown and any new grow experienced in the church is merely the trading of people. That new converts merely replace those that die or leave. Be blessed my brother EdB |

Brian The branch of this thread you responded to, was discussing discipleship within the church. Christianity once a powerful influence in many nations is declining and the question was why? Is it because the message is outdated? or the music isn't right? or we aren't doing enough evangelism, or that Christianity just doesn't seem to work? The discussion came to the point of discipleship and that is where I made my comments that you responded to. While I could probably attempt to speak about the church of the world I think I would be better able to speak to what I have directly observed here in the States. Your right, in the example I gave, the men did need to find another church. But that wasn't why I used his example. I gave that example as a way to show what is taking place in many churches around this nation and I believe also around the world. The church has placed it’s focus not on making disciples but building numbers. Churches will go to most any measure to draw more people in but in most cases they do not have resources in place to disciple them once they do come in. Your last paragraph is actually a confirmation of what I was saying. EdB |

That my dear Christian sister is one we all fight to some degree or another. Paul said even he did things he didn't want to do. I have found in my life if I pray, make myself accountable to someone, and submit to God and resist Satan will flee from me. It is not easy or without pitfalls and setbacks but it can be done. God delievered me from many things and He will deliver you. I pray for you now that you may experience a complete victory over this in Jesus name. Share your problem with you pastor and seek out his support, if you have a close and trusted friend in the Lord share with them and ask them for their support. Be blessed and when your lonely why not come to the forum and join in the Bible study? EdB |

276 | Pledge, "under God", WWJD? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 105963
Parable I would vote to keep it in since this nation has established the right of religious freedom not freedom from religion. To do anything else the Supreme court moves from judicial position to legislative. If the people that want it removed they should be forced to put the issue to a vote. Somewhere this country turned from a democracy where the majority rules to what the Supreme court interprets as we can't offend anyone. That is nonsense! However that is not how things work. I would vote to keep it in on the premise that this nation was established as a God fearing nation (actually a Christian God fearing nation). Therefore those words are the essence of what this nation was. Alas that also is not how things work. How things work is to make sure special interest groups are not offended and by what people see or believe to be positive. We judge what is good therefor morals are good provided you define them, truth is good provided it is situational, justice is good provided you win, religion is bad it takes away all our fun. The real problem is instead of living Christian live we have tried to force religion down peoples throats. To the unsaved world most Christians are viewed as hypocrites, narrow minded and mean spirited. Why because we tried to legislate our religion upon them instead of living a Christian life before them. Lastly I do not see this as a line drawn in the sand issue. I seriously question whether a Christian should even pledge allegiance in the first place. Rest assured my allegiance is not to this country but rather to the Creator of this world and His Son Jesus Christ. While I support this country over any other even to the point of dying to protect it’s right to exist my allegiance remains to God. EdB |

My hat off to you. We talk about hero's and this nation has many but I think the real hero's are the teachers that serving in our schools today. Thank you! Your right we as Christians must set the example by our life, not the laws we pass, rules we make, or the things we say. EdB |

279 | Pledge, "under God", WWJD? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 106336
Aniset I agree Jesus would not say the pledge to start with so asking the question what would Jesus do is problematic in itself. I also do not see this as a line in the sand type of situation. To me abortion should be a line in the sand but alas it is not. However saying one nation under God does little in my eyes. While I would love for this nation to be at a place where such an issue isn't even raised, it isn't. Many claim this is the persecution for Christianity for the sake of Christ and I pray that it is. However I fear the real reason is people are feed up with what they preceive as hypocritical Christians trying to shove religion down their throats as the Christians shot their own wounded. If they remove one nation under God from the pledge there is nothing stopping us from saying it or from teaching our children to say it. However if we don't live as nation under God it is a little hyppcritical to say we do. EdB |

280 | New church? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 106983
Prayer! It is the strongest most powerful force in the world. When you pray, pray that God will renew, strengthen and build the spiritual bond between you and your wife, that her desire will be to seek God first, that she will develop a hunger for God a hunger that can only be quenched by drawing closer to God. Pray believing that God hears and God will, will be done. I know a couple that attends a church where the pastor openly lied to them. In other words they know for a fact the pastor is liar yet they won't leave because they have friends there. They aren't seeking righteousness they are seeking social comfort. While it not the same thing it is similar your wife rather than seeking God is seeking that her needs be met, this is self centered or focused and only the Holy Spirit can change that. Keep her in bathed in prayer and live rightly before her, God is faithful He knows the desires of your heart. EdB |
