Justme I think we need to make a critical distinction here. Today what is called a problem with contemporary music is a misnomer the issue isn’t beat or style or even instruments the issue is intent and content. Many of the songs used in today’s worship is not praising God but rather the singer of the song. They don’t speak for God’s power and might or of His character and abilities but rather the singer’s abilities and power. Many times instruments aren’t blended in to make a beautiful sound but rather highlighted to demonstrate the players ability. If your church uses contemporary songs that speaks of God and give Him and praise and worship and do it so eyes are focused on God rather than the performers then you are truly blessed. However today much of what is done in the name of praise and worship is done as a performance or to give the people warm fussys. God become ancillary as does the worship of Him. This problem seems to become more prevalent when a contemporary style of music is used thus contemporary music ends up being blamed. I have been in churches that sang nothing but hymns and the praise and worship was nothing more than a show to set the stage for what the pastor hoped would happen next. I have also been in churches where the praise and worship used nothing but contemporary style of music but you had no doubt God was being worshipped through it. I think there is also an issue of sound level to many today louder is better and many musicians have learned that loudness also makes up for a lack of practice. Therefore in many churches the music is so loud your overpowered. Your sense of discernment is lost and you are blared into a condition of senselessness, therefore the music become once again viewed as good. While in fact it was terrible mostly due to a lack of commitment and practice. Once more whether the music is contemporary or classical hymns it should enhance and focus the worship upon God, not detract or blur what is really being worshipped. Any criticism of worship usually is met with the argument your stuck in the past, you don't want to move on. That is not it at all. Those of us that understand and desire to worship God realize the error that is being brought into the church in the name of modernism. It is not an issue of drums or guitars versus organs and pianos it is a issue of content and intent. What is being done for what reason. EdB |

I once knew a woman that had a similar situation. She did everything she could to change her husband but the more she tired the more his heels dug in. One day she more or less gave up. Within 6 months her husband was walking closely with the Lord. He is perfected in our weakness. God knows your heart and has promised that He is faithful. Keep her in prayer and trust that God will move quickly. EdB |

Justme I agree change is hard and your right many of the tunes written back when did use secular music melodies. However I think one thing has changed most of the older songs were written to worship God today the motivative in many (not all) cases is to make money. It has been learned that if you can stir the people emotionally you will be played. In the past the song was judged on content and intent, did it give glory and honor to God and was it played or sung in a way that honored God. As I said before a true worship song can be played on a drum using a hard rock beat if the primary focus is praising God. But the inverse is also true a hymn played on an organ to exhibit the ability of the player is no more worship than Dean Martin singing Everybody loves Somebody. EdB |

RoS I forgot to mention most of these type debates atheist love to keep Christians on the defensive. They will make outlandish comments and to keep busy Christians defending against them. He made a blanket statement that the Bible says the world is flat and wants you to waste time energy searching for a rebuttal rather than a being able to show the weaknesses of his argument. Turn the tables tell him to show where the Bible says the world is flat. Another great argument atheists love to bring forward is war, they first thing out of their mouths is nearly every war was fought in the name of Christianity. While this accusation is patently false it hard to argue against since most war was good versus evil thus Christianity can be seen as the line in sand. Instead of playing into his hand so to speak. Ask him how many hospitals, colleges, institutions of higher learning (nearly all were started by Christian organizations) were started by atheist. Ask him to show you one attempt by atheist to relieve the plight of man either through charity (most if not all were Christian in origin or are based on Christian principles), orphanages, medical relief organizations (again most if not all have Christian origins or are based on Christian principles). Atheist love to attack missionary efforts and how the missionaries brought disease and immorality to innocent cultures. Ask him to show you a country that was exposed to Christianity that did not have a decrease in illiteracy, a decrease in deaths at child birth, increased medical care and increase in the general standard of living. Atheist love to attack Christians by saying we force our morality on them. Ask him which law he would like to see repealed. Drug laws? So we can be a nation in a stupor seeking only to serve ourselves rather than those around us. Prostitution laws so we openly allow women to be demeaned by men. We can so remove self worth to the point we place a low dollar value on our own body and sell it openly to be used by anyone with the money. Or maybe the pornography laws so we can desensitize our youth to the point that nothing is special, the opposite sex is nothing more than something to lusted after. Besides it will be good future employment for his daughter. You will be surprised how many people will argue for prostitution and pornography but will grow pale when you suggest it as a career of choice to their son or daughter. Turn the tables on the atheist ask them to show one historical contribution their philosophy has made to the betterment of man. Instead of defending Christianity against their challenges make them defend their way of life against the welfare of society. EdB |

RoS Be very careful using what Norm has stated it is nothing more than a play on numbers that someone did and proves nothing. If one looks long enough and hard enough one can find an contrived explanation for most anything. It is like the Bible codes. However further research has shown that using the same methodology and applied to the book Moby Dick one could find the same type of word configurations. Dr Norm Geisler addressed this situation in his book “When Critics Ask” by saying. Reference 1 Kings 7:23 and pi value of 3.14159. “This is not an error. The Biblical record of the various measurements of the different parts of the temple are not necessarily designed to provide precise scientific or mathematical calculations. Rather, the Scripture simply provide a reasonable approximation. Rounding of numbers of the reporting of approximate values or measurements was a common practice in ancient times when exact scientific calculations were not used.” If you enter Norm’s findings into the discussion you open the door to having to prove happenstance rather than Biblical fact. For the Laver to be 30 cubits in circumference the diameter would be 9.6 plus cubits. I see no problem calling 10 cubits as being close enough here. EdB |

289 | Thompson Chain Reference: useful? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 107457
JRM As I said there is a software copy made by Iexalt (Wordsearch)of the Thompson that is fantastic for adding your own notes to. Plus it does all the work for you all you have to hit is chain number and it lists the whole chain with scripture. I would post a website but it has too many special characters. Go to www.wordsearchbible.com The package is 40 dollars and comes with many Bibles and commentaries and such even includes both the NASB and NASB updated. Once you get to the website look on the left for Thompson Chain Reference Bible it is about 3 quarters down the package list. EdB |

Actually "Justme" wasn't the only one that felt that website was a bad. The website supports doctrine that is in direct conflict with orthodox Christianity, the Bible, and the teachings of Jesus and I thought it was so obvious that it didn't need to be said. However it apparently does, that "cool website" is theologically wrong. EdB |

Matthew 3:16-17 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. [17] And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." That is a living example of the Godhead showing the three persons that make it up. Not one as your website incorrectly claims. EdB |

That is right there is only one God but three members of the Godhead. Father Son and Holy Ghost all three manifested at one time with Jesus in the water the Holy Spirit upoin Him as a dove adn the Father in Heaven saying this is my Son in whom I'm well pleased. That is traditional orthodox Christianity. No I don't have a problem with it that website does. EdB |

My friend I have a Greek Orthodox Bishop as a very close and personal friend and let me assure you he does hold to the Trinity. Your statement that the Trinity of the Godhead was held by the church as heresy before the council of Nicaea is patently false. The council of Nicaea was instituted to deal with the false teaching against the Trinity. The New Testament testifies of it's existence, the personal writings of the Apostles and early church leaders show they were in agreement with the doctrine and later writings of the men that studied directly under the Apostles show the Apostles held to the doctrine of the Trinity. The existence of which is not easly understandable to man but clearly seen in Matthew 3:16 and 17. Your a Oneness Pentecostal I believe and that is their belief, I understand it but I have to say it is also very wrong. EdB |

296 | Women Preachers? Yes or No? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 108265
Justme You bring up an excellent point. One that needs to be explored more. These WOF men and women are first to decry anyone that says anything about them, quickly reciting "touch not God's anointed", yet they will mock everyone else for not knowing what they "know". They leave no room for Billy Graham or anyone else calling them deceived men and women that live "defeated lives" not utilizing all of the "power God has for man". The real interesting part of it is those that follow them never notice this. A WOF preacher can belittle any denomination saying I was once a … but God opened my eyes to the truth and delivered me. And everyone will have a little chuckle. But heaven help the person that says I was once WOF and God opened my eyes to the truth and I became ... WOF are the first to say denominations are from the pit of hell yet they will tell you don’t know the truth unless you believe as they do. EdB |

Hank To you also I give a hardy amen most excellent answer. I would still like an answer to the subject Justme brought up. Why do WOF adherents feel it is okay to attack non WOF preachers with impunity and make fun of various denominations. Yet the minute someone says something about them they run behind "touch not God's anointed" EdB |
