182 | What does Lo-debar mean in Hebrew? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 101065
MKM9 Jeremiah seems to suggest there is by asking this rethorical question Jeremiah 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered? But it appears to be ineffective. And later the same prophet suggests that maybe still more was needed. Jeremiah 46:11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured. By the way there is no statement in the Bible referencing an a "the Balm of Gilead." other than these two. :-) EdB |

mkm9 Now you have me interested. I wonder where the Balm of Gilead started carrying the implication of a good thing? If we study the area we learn the region was known for its healing balm. Gilead was specially noted for its balm collected from “balm of Gilead” trees, and worth twice its weight in silver. Smith, W. (1997). Smith's Bible dictionary. Nashville: Thomas Nelson A very quick look at the commentators all agree that Jeremiah wasn't asking merely a rhetorical question but also making a statement that Gilead was in rebellion and therefore had no hope. There is no healing, physical or spiritual, for a people intent on rebelling against God. Radmacher, E. D. (1999). Nelson's new illustrated Bible commentary. Nashville: T. Nelson Publishers. Walking this backward we see the people were depending on the their balm to see them through. I other words the Balm of Gilead represents their self reliance. Therefore the Biblical reference to the “balm of Gilead” is as an object in which to place you self reliance Now I come back to my question I wonder how an item of self reliance is turned around to mean something good, such as Jesus the Balm of Gilead? Personally I see more as an invention of a song writer not so interested in truth but rather making the song work. I would be very careful talking about the ‘Balm of Gilead’ for those that know the 'whole' story might think your walking on the wrong side. EdB |

mkm9 Occasionally I meet someone that proudly proclaims they are willing to become a martyr. I think many of them are like so many so called hero's they talk a lot but that is all they do. I think most are like you and I wondering if we could endure to the end and maybe a little frightened that we might brng shame to the name Christian. We must trust in God and believe HE WILL SEE US THROUGH all that life would bring us. As to the question will we have to endure something, I don't know? But I this I do know, the day is coming and each day it is one day closer where Christians everywhere will once again be hunted and killed. EdB |

mkm9 I understand the concept! I also see it being established on faulty reasoning. The Balm of Gilead was the creation of man, was no able to heal what Gilead needed healed, it was birthed in self reliance and idol worship. Jesus is not the Balm "of" Gilead He is the healing balm "to" Gilead and the whole world. Jesus is able to heal and bring restoration to our lives. He is not the creation of man but the rock of ages, ancient of days, Son of God, and the one that brings life where once there was none. Therefore to me the connection of Jesus to the Balm of Gilead is nothing more than a songwriter playing loosely with the truth of scripture to make a song work.. I find that distasteful. This is often the case and I pray people would display more discernment before they so willing accept and sing so called Christian songs. EdB |

Asis Well said my brother and that fact is sadly missed by many in the church today. They preach health, wealth and prosperity while brothers and sisters are dying horrible deaths and being forced to live in impoverished conditions. EdB |

Norrie I have to agree I get worried when someone starts using various versions of the Bible to make points. I'm very much support most translations but I have repeatedly said you can prove most anything if you pull it out of context. I have always felt like the lone dog because everyone raves about the Purpose Driven Church and I felt it missed the mark. I can't argue Rick Warren' success but I don't think his methods were meant for everyone. I too have been in churches where they had intermission (10 to 15 minute break in the middle of the service) and clips from various movies and TV shows. I was less than impressed with their results. So while I will not argue whether Rick is right or not, I will say his methods can fall flat in some churches. I fear when we try to take another man's course and try to make it ours. We are all given a path to walk by God and the Holy Spirit to guide us along that path. I think we can get real lost seeking man's direction. EdB |

Norrie Like I said I don't know if there is anything per se wrong with the Purpose Driven Church, I just knew it wasn't for me. I think you may ned to give it some time to see if it has any benefit for you. You don't want to per judge it and miss a possible blessing that God has for you. Make sure you keep your pastor your church and yourself in prayer and the Holy Spirit will accomplish what needs to be done in your life and the church's life. EdB |

Tim I agree using a video clip isn't really much different than quoting a piece of literature. However I do object to showing a clip for a movie that probably couldn't be shown in it's entirety in the church do to it's content. I think this is about the same as quoting from Lady Chattery’s Lover. And this is being done in some churches. I also think we can make the atmosphere so casual, so familiar, so worldly that the message gets lost. I sat under one man that got caught up in the moment describing a large woman and started using the hand jesters that are commonly used to describe a well endowed lady. I and many others were uncomfortable. When he realized what he was doing he grinned and sheepishly said that since he had already done it we all knew what he was speaking about. To me that was a little to casual. I think it also talked alot about how he must be outside people's view. EdB |

193 | Will suicide condem my soul to hell? | Bible general Archive 2 | EdB | 101705
John As you know I never do learn. :-) And at the risk of getting involved in another one of these struggles let me say your reading of Romans 9 is a little different than mine. :-) In Romans 9 the potter and clay is demonstration of God's ability to use created man to accomplish his will. It is not a lesson in Salvation. I have always read it more as explanation of why some are born handicapped (Exodus 4:11 before anyone jumps on me), talented, rich, poor, smart or slow. Why some people seem to be disposed to accomplish things and others willing to ride the waves. God harden Pharaoh’s heart this we know but do we know Pharaoh’s eternal condition? No. We see Essau and Jacob where God said he hated (hated here means he knew Essau would think so little of his inheritance) Essau, yet none of us knows Essau’s eternal condition. In this passage God is saying he choose the children of Abraham to bless, which He did by allowing them to be in the lineage of Jesus but once again are all Abraham’s children saved? No Are all Abraham’s children lost ? No once again this passage is not talking about Salvation but rather how God uses all of creation to accomplish His purpose. Also in the example is the clay pot a inanimate object, however in us God created emotions and responses such as rebellion, rejection, hatred, love, acceptance and repentance. But most of all faith and the ability to pray. Both faith and prayer effects the outcome of many things. To the question does suicide condemn the soul to hell. The answer should be no true believer in Christ would commit suicide. To commit suicide you have to be hopeless, yet a true believer has hope, to commit suicide you have to be alone and afraid yet a true believer is neither. To commit suicide you have to be willing to destroy the temple of the Holy Spirit and once again a true believe would never do that. The question should not be can you commit suicide and still go to heaven. The question is and should be can a true Christian commit suicide. EdB |

John You have totally missed the point I was making and I'm sorry I even posted it. Your reference to Ezek 32:32 as to the outcome of Pharaoh doesn't float it is two different points in time. I did overlook Essau's situation in Hebrews, sorry :-0 I also never said the clay didn't represent mankind I said it wasn't representative of Mankind in relation to God and salvation. However if you don't like that fine, like I said I understand differently than you and neither of us will ever convince the other to see it our way. Let us drop it. EdB |

John Is this writer the accuser of the brethern or the watchman on wall sounding the alarm? Yes God is in control but as we see many places in the Old Testament God's people don't always do what God desires and many times God allows us enough rope, if you will, to get ourselves into real trouble. Once again Christianity is a participation religion not one like Islam where things happen due to Kismet. Prayer changes things and we even see prayer changing God direction. I believe we have more actual control over our destiny than you do. EdB |

John I have absolutely no doubt God is in control of tomorrow however I do believe prayer changes things. Which occurs first? I think you find yourself in the old chicken and egg go around. However whether you want to admit it or not your are fatalistic and very much do hold to Kismet. You view God in total control and we are made to act and react according to His plan. I say God's plan is so all inclusive that no matter how we act or react we fit into His plan. Exodus 32:10-11 Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation." [11] Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: "Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Genesis 18:20-26 And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, [21] I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." [22] Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. [23] And Abraham came near and said, "Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? [24] Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? [25] Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" [26] So the Lord said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes." Numbers 11:2 Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the Lord, the fire was quenched. Numbers 21:7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. Deut. 9:20 And the Lord was very angry with Aaron and would have destroyed him; so I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 2 Samuel 24:17 Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, "Surely I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray, be against me and against my father's house." Even Jesus went to the cross out of obedience not because God forced Him. His prayer in the garden reveals this along with Jesus' claim that legions of angels were at his disposal to free Him should He so desire. Your arguement doesn't hold water in light of what has actually taken place in scripture. I don't want to argue this with you and I won't so let it go! EdB |
