I don't know when the title 'Pope' was first used, or if it was used by Peter. However, I believe the following passages does reinforce Jesus selection of Peter as the leader of His Church Mark 16:5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. Mark 16:6 And he *said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. Mark 16:7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'" Peter was singled out to reaffirm his position as the leader of the disciples ...... Luke 24:34 saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon." First, Jesus appeared to Peter, then the other disciples ...... John 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead. John 21:15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He *said to him, "Tend My lambs." John 21:16 He *said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He *said to him, "Shepherd My sheep." John 21:17 He *said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus *said to him, "Tend My sheep. |

Brian G, I'm sorry but my question is about the verses 23:8-9 If you dont know what the title of Peter its okay, but may I ask this question again. Why you have to call your priest father? or the Pope Holy Father? Matthew 23:8-9 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. I hope I will not offended you I'm asking those question so you can have your opportunity to depend what you beleived in or it was written in the Bible. what I would want to get from you is to explain those verses. Thank you, Johnny Next time if you have time to answer our posted I will ask you about purgatory.... |

Hi Johnny, I'm not Brian, but I may be able to answer that for you. "The word "Pope" means "Papa", "Father". At first it was applied to all Western Bishops. About A.D. 500 it began to be restricted to the Bishop of Rome, and soon, in common use, came to mean Universal Bishop. The Roman Church list of Popes includes the Bishops of Rome from the 1st century onward. But for 500 years Bishops of Rome were NOT Popes. The idea that a Bishop of Rome should have authority over the whole church was a slow growth, bitterly contested at every step, and never has at any time, been universally recognized." There Thank you, but I think still not explain the verses that I was quoted. I hope you can explain these verses Matthew 23:8-9 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Hope you can enlighten us why you call your priest father? the same way you have Pope or Holy Father? which is different to what Jesus Christ taught to his disciples? If really willing to answer my questions, I have some question for you, and I hope you can explain it. This is my question from the Bible 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. We know that catholic priest are forbid themselves to marry. They also encourage catholic member to abstain from meats during Holy Week. This is not to strike your believed (if you are a catholic) just a question why some propecies in the Bible sometimes happened and related to your doctrines. I hope you will not offended. If you can explain it to us, too many users of the this study Bible will englighten to your teaching and from different teaching from different religion. Thank you, Johnny Answer: Hi Johnny, I'm not Brian, but I may be able to answer that for you. |
