Dear WAK, For what it is worth, let's see if we can answer your questions. First, let me invite you to bring whatever verses you have with you to the table. We would be glad to discuss them if you would like. Now for your questions. "If you're elected, I will answer the door???" Only the elect come knocking. There is no desire to know God. Romans 3:10ff; John 6:44. The fact that God chose to save any (even one), when all deserving of Hell (meant to be taken literally), is not bad news. Please, in my neck of the woods, "Hell" has become a swear word when it is not used in proper context. I would appreciate if you would use it only as given in Scripture. I'm not sure that anybody has a problem with the fact that God is there for all who ask. The question is "who is asking?" Please, again, when you return, I invite you to bring your verses to the table. Perhaps they can shed some light on the subject. In Him, Benjamite |

Hey Ben and Curt, Rather than verses, I like the overall simple often-repeated basic messages of the NT, you know grace, faith, love. I'm simple and my faith is simple. Many times I think we use verses (the tail) to wag the Bible (the dog). I don't think salvation is in the "details" or in the much- debated mysteries of the Bible (Romans:9?). Millions have been chained, generation after generation, by verses out of sync with the rest of the Bible(the South until this generation?). How very very sad. We need to be careful with verses or sections that don't align well with the overall sprit of the NT. I call a duck, a duck. And if what you say is true... then the Good News is Terrible News. Tell a 100 plain people( who know ducks) they have no choice regarding eternal HELL... let me know what they think about your version of the GoodNews. What is the Greek for BadNews? Wow, Christ didn't die for our sins, only the sins of the elect. (I have a joke here but I won't say it ). Again, nothing personal and my apologies for not being academic (a blessing?) and my earlier use of the word Hell. PS: I'm not even sure Paul is talking about salvation per-se (vs.other promises) in Romans 9, especially in the context. The context is goofy because he's talking about the Jews being made hard hearted (like Pharaoh) but the Jews are saved in the end! Weird. |

The problem with your view, in my humble opinion, is that it makes light of Scripture. I give you 2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" If we take Scripture in its entirety, there is considerable discussion of "the elect" and God's sovereign right to choose. In fact, the word "elect" appears 9 times in the NT and the word "chosen" appears 116 times in Scripture. However the words "free will" do not appear once. God didn't just give us Scripture to make us feel good. God gave us Scripture to teach us. Unfortunately, millions more people have been chained by their ignorance of Scripture than by their study of it. By the way, since you brought it up, the Bible belt is in the south. And apostacy emanates from all places, Yale Divinity included. As I recall, it was northerners who brought slaves from Africa... but that doesn't count I guess. The good news is that God is merciful. But we can only understand that mercy, and the value of faith, love, hope and grace if we understand our hopelessness without them. Thus, the whole message of the Bible is first the bad news (the ten commandments which we cannot keep), and then the good news (that Christ died to pay the price for our sin). My point is that we can't just ignore some verses because we don't like them. BTW, "hell" is used 13 times in the NT, so you're ok there. Blessings Curt |

Curt just a final thought: If you believe in election I don't you can say that Christ died to pay for our sins. At best, it's imprecise. I guess much of the bible is imprecise, we need to add "if elected" to all those promises. Enjoyed the banter, God Bless WAK |
