Tim You almost had me there with your logic. If the bible doesn't describe it in detail it must not exist. The Bible says “do not gossip”, it does not give a definition of gossip so using your logic gossip is only in the eyes of the beholder and we can do it if we don’t call it gossip. The Bible clearly shows the magicians of the time had power, turned rods into a snake, water into blood, and etc, all without preparation time so it wasn't a staged act. God always had a way of letting us know what He considered important. The Bible clearly tells us to stay away from magic, witchcraft, divining spirits, sorcery. Those are clearly defined terms. There are even more defined if we go back to the original language. However the point I making here is the Bible doesn’t say watch you will get tricked by these, or don’t let them mislead you, or there is no power here. It clearly says stay away. We see the witch of Endor summon a spirit, it is not called a false apparition but rather a spirit. To me that is enough to convince me Satan has power and will allow those that chose to align themselves with him to use that power. EdB |

Greetings Ed! Don't get me wrong! I have an open mind on this subject. I do believe in angels and demons, so I'm not an anti-supernaturalist. I was just struck by how little there is in the Bible about this issue and I was wondering what a Biblical view of magic would look like! For example, the passages you refered to could simply be examples of very good charlotens (sp?). The witch of Endor seemed more surprised than anyone else when God allowed the spirit to speak! :-) I haven't done any kind of indepth study on the words used, but I have noticed over the years a couple of facts. 1) Most of the words have to do with the use of drugs (potions, hallucigents, etc...). 2) Most of the passages dealing with magic focus on attempts to divine the future, without appealing to God. If magic, as we think of it, does exist, the following must be true: 1) It is demonic in source, not natural. 2) It would have no power over believers. Either way, magic in the Bible appears to be very different from the popular conception of it. It would be a very interesting study! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim Yes I think real magic is demonic. Yes I believe Christians are exempt from it's power. But I believe there is a world out there filled with it. With out getting into a once saved always saved discussion I also believe "Christians" can allow or give entrance to such forces. Jesus said there would be some that said we healed in your name and cast out demons in your name and Jesus said I never knew you. To me that says Satan counterfeits healings and even demon exorcisms in an effort to deceive many. I think this is what we witness many times when we see healings through men that are obviously seeking the glory for themselves rather than giving it to God. Yes it would be a interesting study. In fact the longer we discuss this I discover more reasons to stand in opposition to any opposing view. EdB |
