1 | How do we know that we are truly saved? | 1 John 3:24 | Aixen7z4 | 141565
Anyone who believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself. Anyone who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he does not believe the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record: God has given to us eternal life. This life is in his Son, and anyone who has the Son has eternal life. Anyone who does not have the Son of God does not have eternal life. These things have I written to you who believe on the name of the Son of God, that you may know that ye have eternal life. |

2 | How do we know that we are truly saved? | 1 John 3:24 | Ray | 141568
Hi Aixen7z4, You wrote that "Anyone who believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself." It is important also to recognize that the verse before this, 1 John 5:9 says that the witness of God is greater than the witness of men. So the witness that makes us KNOW that we are saved is the Holy Spirit who witnesses with our spirit that we belong to Him; that we are children of God. The witness in ourselves is our spirit. The flesh is hostile to God. In that regard, I interpret Romans 8:9 as saying "However, you are not in the flesh but in the spirit [sic], if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you." Any thoughts on that interpretation? From the heart, Ray |

3 | How do we know that we are truly saved? | 1 John 3:24 | Aixen7z4 | 141586
The witness in ourselves is not between our spirit and our flesh but between our spirit and the Holy Spirit who is given to us to indwell us, the same witness that you referenced in Romans 8. The witness that we get from communicating with God is greater and more important than what we may get in communicating with other men. What God says, in his word, and by his Spirit, is more important than what other people say. This may be related to the comments made by Angel on this day. Men may look on the outward appearance. They may see our failures. But God looks on the heart. He knows whether we have repented and put our trust in his Son. He knows whether we are his, and he lets us know. The witness of God is great. It is in his word, and he communicates it to us by his Spirit. This communication is to us as individuals, to our hearts, if you will, so that we can know for sure that we are saved. |

Greeting Aixen7z4, Doc and Pastor Glenn - I'd like your input on Incarnational reality (Col 1:27) and practicing the presence of God in our daily lives - I suspect this might be a corollary to "loving His appearing" as mentioned earlier in this thread. I liked the article Doc linked to - How do I know I love God? We read in John 14 that loving Jesus is obeying Him - to me this has the potential for becoming legalistic or "religious". I suspect that obeying Him without the love that He demands (Love the Lord your God with all your heart - what does this look like?)is often lacking in our "works." I've been thinking about "Incarnational reality" for a while now . . . How does the presence of Christ IN us affect our thoughts and actions (or how should it?). . . Unlike David, we need not long for His presence for He is always with us - yet in the dark night of the soul, I admit I have felt pretty alone . . . If He is IN Me and I am in Him - what causes me to think that He is absent at those dark times? Is practicing the presence of God (ie Br. Lawrence)the answer? What scriptures support this? Comments? Blessings, mommapbs |
