1 | CONDITIONAL ETERNAL SECURITY | 2 Pet 1:10 | Pastor Glenn | 62579 | ||
BradK, Just an observation: Heb 6:4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6if they fall away,[2] to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. Notice all of the “AND”s here. 1. those who were once enlightened AND 2. have tasted the heavenly gift AND 3. have become partakers of the Holy Spirit AND 4. have tasted the good word of God AND 5. the powers of the age to come Doesn’t this indicate a Christian that is very very close to God? It seems it would take a person with the mindset of Satan to turn back from that kind of relationship to God. God Bless, Pastor Glenn |

Pastor Glen: You are correct that this verse refers to a Christian. The Christian has becone so hard hearted and carnal, that he has gone beyond the point of repentance, not loss of salvation. Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:5 gave instructions to "hand this man over to satan, so that the sinful nature maybe destroyed and has his spirit saved on the day of the Lord." NIV. As I undersand this verse in Hebrews it is a Christian who can not be brought back to repentance. I think if you carefully do a word study of both verses mentioned in this note you might well come to the same conclusion. We are not saved by our works nor are we lost because of the lack of works. Salvation is by Grace plus nothing! Salvation is not withdrawn, but the beliver how has gone beyond being able to repent. This is a very serious spiritual condition. God in His wisdon does remove carnal Christians from this world. Hebrews chapter 12, is an example of what Godly discipline is. The key point of the verse is "being brought back to repentance". We should not ask questions of a verse that it is not dealing with. Simply put, this verse is not dealing with the loss of salvation, only the impossibility of further repenting. I hope this adds something more to think about. justme |

Justme, I am not sure that I can ever truly finish thinking about these things and all of the implications. This may be a reason why God made us in this physical world, while He is of spiritual nature. We must all leave our physical nature behind since flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.
