1 | Why remain defeated? | Heb 10:14 | Gal5:16 | 108091
Why do we hang on to that sinful nature so dearly? Everyone always quotes the later part of Romans chapter 7 because they find that it soothes their guilt! Move on to chapter 8! "You however are not controlled by the sinful nature, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you..." People have turned what Paul was saying about the sinful nature before you die to it, into a license to sin. The reason your conscience is not clear is that you still sin. Read 2 Timothy 2:19 if you think that remaining in your defeated state is okay. People love to quote 1 John 1:8-2:2 to prove their point that everyone sins, has sinned, and will always sin. Again, keep going! Read 1 John chapter 3. "No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him." Even in the former passage the Holy Spirit tells us that the point is that you will not sin! It says "But IF anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense", not WHEN everybody sins! Do I claim to be perfect? No, not yet. The difference between me and the other commentors is that I believe that Christ will produce it in me before I die. One question I always ask people to which they cannot respond is if perfection is not humanly possible, then how did Jesus do it. We deny the power of the Holy Spirit which we have received through Christ when we refuse to believe that he will produce in us the kind of righteousness that the Father requires. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 is fulfilled before our eyes. To those who are waiting for death to come before they are perfected, I refer you to 1 John 3 where the Holy Spirit calls you a deceiver trying to lead us astray. If I do what is right, I am righteous, just as Jesus is righteous. You who do what is sinful are of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason Jesus appeared was to destroy the devil's. work. Again, no one who is born of God will continue to sin because God's seed (which is the Holy Spirit) remains in him; he cannot go on sinning because he has been born of God. |

2 | Why remain defeated? | Heb 10:14 | stjones | 108099
Greetings, Gal5:16; I probably shouldn't respond because such judgmental, prideful posts always put me in a bad mood. I find messages that purport to tell the reader what he or she is thinking particularly annoying. But a couple of points just cry out for comment: You said "One question I always ask people to which they cannot respond is if perfection is not humanly possible, then how did Jesus do it." I can't imagine who you've been asking; the answer is simple. Jesus was fully God. He was not a human infused by the Holy Spirit as ordinary Christians are. If I'm not mistaken, there hasn't been another since - not me, not you. But as I read the rest of your post, I see that contrary to your initial claims, you too seem to "remain defeated." You do not "claim to perfect." If you are not perfect, then "you do what is sinful." And as John says, "No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him" (1 John 3:6) Unless God has started grading on a curve, you are failing right along with the rest of us miserable sinners. I hope you'll let us know when your knowledge of God's will is perfect every second of every day and your obedience to his will is perfect every second of every day. Until then, I suggest you trust in Jesus to cover your sins - even those you commit today. See? I told you such posts make me grouchy. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

3 | My conscience is clear | Heb 10:14 | Gal5:16 | 108125
Steve/Indiana: I love you. Please forgive me if I came across judgemental or prideful. My intent is not to boast, but to set the record straight. God's words have been twisted by men for long enough. What I see happening is God's grace has been twisted into a license to sin. Now, however, is the time for the church to judge itself, and you must excuse me while I let God form me into the likeness of God's Son - Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4:17 and Romans 8:29) Jesus was fully God and fully man. The way he overcame the world was through his submission to the Father's will which he knew because he had God's Spirit without limit. He was made like us in every way (Hebrews 2:16-18) so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest. He was capable of sinning, or the fact that he overcame would not be an accomplishment (John 16:33). I will never boast in myself if that is what you are trying to get me to do. I will say only this; My conscience is clear, is yours? John 3:34 - For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. 1 Peter 4:17 - For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? |

4 | My conscience is clear | Heb 10:14 | stjones | 108133
Hi, Gal5:16; Thanks for the reply. I agree that there are people who use grace as an excuse to sin. I know very few people like that and I don't think it is typical of most Christians. I also agree that it is God's intent to mold us into his Son's likeness and that our submission is required for that to happen. I don't agree that anyone has achieved such a perfect state of submission and such a perfect knowledge of God's will that God's job is finished. Everyone who falls short of that perfection (which is everyone but Jesus) is a sinner, plain and simple. If your conscience is clear, then you mispoke yourself in your original post; you must indeed be perfect. If you aren't perfect, you're a sinner just like the rest of us. You can't have it both ways. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

5 | Why not see for yourself? | Heb 10:14 | Gal5:16 | 108199
Let us not forget the verse we are discussing Hebrews 10:14. According to this verse we have already been made perfect, and are BEING made holy. I use the two words interchangeably sometimes, and perhaps I should more correctly be talking about holiness. We are already perfect by Christ's one sacrifice. Conscience and guilt, however, are different matters. Plug the keywords into Biblegateway, and, with regard to conscience, you will find that Paul declared that his conscience was clear: "My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me." and again "Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace." With regard to guilt, in Hebrews 10:22 it says "...let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water." Listen to your conscience, and surrender the things that are holding you back from victory in Jesus Christ. He wants to overcome the world for you if you will let him. There are rewards for you if you do. Read Revelation 2 and 3! I'm not making this stuff up. Please do not take my word for it, but research it yourself. Why not? |

If you interchangeably use holy and perfect ... are you looking at the Greek?
7 | Why not see for yourself? | Heb 10:14 | Gal5:16 | 108225
Arguing about this any further is pointless. I will close with this, and you are free to have the last word: "Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you" |
