1 | What does judgement look like | 2 Cor 5:10 | bill0624 | 214004
Sure he did, Steve. And what does it mean to believe in him? "Easy Believism" says that all it means to believe in Jesus is to mentally acknowledge that he died, was buried, and rose again. That's it! Done! Nothing about following him or obeying him. Jesus never said to "make believers". He said to "make disciples" teaching them to obey what HE taught. He never said to teach them to obey Moses, Samuel, Paul, Peter, etc. These others certainly shouldn't be ignored. But none of them are Jesus Christ. Believing in Jesus is about following HIM, not about following Moses, David, Isaiah, Paul, John, etc. That's my take on it.

Greetings Bill! First of all, welcome to the forum! Secondly, all of Scripture is inspired by the same God. Therefore, all of it is equally authoritative for both doctrine and practice. Eph. 2:8-10 makes it perfectly clear that we do good works because we are saved. We cannot be saved by doing good works. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works. If we are trusting in our own ability to 'obey' God, we will surely fail since we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). Trusting in Him for salvation is not easy. :-) There is something about our fallen, depraved nature that longs to earn our standing before God. In fact, I would argue that trusting Him alone is the hardest thing we could ever have to do. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thanks for the welcome, Tim! But I don't agree that all the Bible is equally authoritative. If we think that, then we need to resume offering animal sacrifices because these were commanded of God's people.

Greetings Bill! There is a difference between Scripture being equally authoritative and equally applicable. :-) A statement by Paul is just as authoritative as a statement by Jesus, since God is the ultimate source of both. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

What is the difference, Tim? Here is a verse from the book of Leviticus: 'You are to keep My statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together.' - Lev 19:19 In this verse, God says not to plant two different kinds of plants in a field. He also says not to wear a garment that has been made from two different kinds of materials (blends). How would you explain to someone that this verse is authoritative for you (that this verse demonstrates God's authority over how you plant and how you dress) but that it is NOT applicable to you (despite the authority of the verse, it doesn't apply to you)? I'm not trying to be contentious, Tim. I really want to know. How can you assert that this verse is authoritative over you but that it doesn't apply to you? If this verse is authoritative over you concerning planting and garments, shouldn't it, by definition, apply to you? If not, why not? |

Dear Bill... We do not base our understanding of Scripture on one verse; But on the entire counsel of Scripture. If our theology doesn't line up, then we do not trow out parts of Scripture, but instead we adjust our understanding to fit what the whole Bible teaches and not just on what part of it teaches. 2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; John |

You haven't addressed my question, Tim. This verse from Leviticus, which you consider to be authoritative for you, says not to plant crops of two different kinds in a field and not to wear garments of two differnt kinds. How is this verse authoritative for you?
