1 | Being filled w/ the Spirit mean tongues? | Acts 2:4 | Searcher56 | 148259 | ||
Susan, I agree with you that Acts 2:4 shows the initial time people were filled with the Spirit after His going to heaven that people spoke in tongues. However,Cornelius and company in Acts 11, is the only other time where we see speaking in tongues at salvation. Luke 1:41 and 67 shows me two people filled with the Spirit - no tongues are mentioned ... also, at least once in the OT (Exo 31:3) ... plus Acts 4:8 and other NT passages don't mention the speaking in tongues when one is filled with the Spirit. Searcher - When one is "filled with the Spirit" what should we expect to see? How about as a suggestion, obedience to God's Word? Just before Easter, I was reading in 1 Cor 14, when a tongue (unknown) is spoken in the congregation, there is to be an interpreter. If there is no interpreter, the speaker is to be silent. It seems to me that one who is filled with the Spirit will walk in obedience to this . . . yet there are those who ignore this instruction and therefore imo, I 'might' be inclinded to conclude that they are not filled with the Spirit. After just reading this passage, on Easter Sunday we (by mistake? no!) found ourselves in a Spanish worship service. I know a smattering of that language but in reality, it is an "unknown tongue" to me. The congregation warmly welcomed us, and they spoke to us in English - even one of the soloists sang in English first for us. When it came time for the message from God's Word, I saw a demonstration of what "being filled with the Spirit" is in the obedience of this body to God's Word. Just before the Pastor spoke, two women came and sat between us. They interpreted every word the Pastor preached. Love in action - being filled with the Spirit, they demonstrated the reality of 1 Cor 14 - the proper use of speaking in an unknown tongue in accordance with God's Word. I realize that this is not what one generally thinks of when we refer to "tongues," but perhaps this experience will bless you or someone else today. mommapbs |
