Greetings Disciplerami! The Judaizers made the same claim to Paul, but he rejected it. Grace plus some effort on our part becomes works. By 'obedience of faith', I assume you are refering to Rom. 1:5. The NIV translates this verse as: "Through him and for his name?s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith." There is no difficulty harmonizing this with Eph. 2:8-10. Faith results in works. We agree on that point. But, Rom. 1:5 does not say that we are saved by odedience in addition to faith. Faith plus works does not result in salvation. To make some effort on our part a necessary component of salvation is to make works necessary for salvation. Well, I have been sick, so I need to get to bed and get ready for work tonight! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim, I hope you get well soon. About your message, if you compare my position to Judaizers', how incredibly unkind of you. Does that fit with the spirit of this forum? We must be careful or it may cause this thread to be removed from the main page. Paul said he was made an apostle to bring about the obedience of the faith. Faith is not a saving faith without obedience (Romans 1:5; 15:18; 16:26). Paul preached baptism in Romans 6. He wasn't a Judaizer but he saw nothing wrong with preaching obedience. Get well soon, Disciplerami |

Greetings Discplerami! Thanks for the well wishes my friend! I'm sorry if you don't like the comparison, but I feel that it is exactly parallel. The three verses you mention all refer to an 'obedience of faith', but none of them say that salvation results from obedience. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

"What use is it my brethren if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him?" Tim says yes! What does that make you? Is James an 'epistle of straw' to you too? Disciplerami |

Greetings Disciplerami! I love James! :-) James doesn't say anything contrary to what Paul said. James is arguing against those who 'claim' to have faith, but have no evidence to back up that claim. Both Paul and James say that saving faith will result in works. The only point we disagree on is that you feel that the works come before salvation, I feel that they come after salvation. This is an important distinction. James responds to and sometimes quote hypothetical objectors, so his letter can be tricky to follow sometimes. But, Paul states it quite clearly, "We are not saved by works!". If it is by works, he says, then it is no longer grace. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
