1 | Help me solve this apparent conflict | Luke 8:15 | Ray | 111796
Hi Huron, I think that no matter how long we have been Christians, there come times when we wonder if the Holy Spirit would not rebuke us. Just as Jesus rebuked the disciples in Luke 9:55, [and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."] I think that the passage in Luke 8 would tell us that we have to hold fast to these words of God [Spirit] and the parable, so that we don't allow the devil to take away the word from our hearts. Verse 18, "Therefore take care how you listen, for whoever has, to him shall more be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks [or, seems to have] he has shall be taken away from him." Thank you for your question. You might consider this Scripture comparison. Luke 8:12, "And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and TAKES AWAY THE WORD from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved." Luke 20:20, "And they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might [Lit. TAKE HOLD OF HIS WORD], so as to deliver Him up to the rule and the authority of the governor." Jeremiah 17:13, NKJ, "O Lord, the hope [Hope?, see 14:8] of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. "Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the Lord, The fountain of living waters." Let's praise Him for giving us the fountain of living waters, the holy spirit and His word for He alone is good. Jeremiah 14:7, "Although our iniquities testify against us, O Lord, act for Thy name's sake! Truly our apostasies have been many, We have sinned against Thee. 8 Thou Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of distress, Why art Thou like a stranger in the land Or like a traveler who has pitched his tent for the night? 9 Why art Thou like a man dismayed, Like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet Thou art in our midst, O Lord, And we are called by Thy name; Do not forsake us!" From the heart, Ray |

2 | Help me solve this apparent conflict | Luke 8:15 | CDBJ | 111805
Hi Huron, When the Bible speaks of the heart one must remember that it isn’t talking about the cardiovascular pump, as it were, but the very core of man. When a person fully believes in Jesus the Son of God and what he did for them on the cross they receive a new nature, being a new creature in Christ. The big problem is, believers while still in this body have two natures, the old sin nature, which is from Adam and the new nature, which is after Christ. There is a war going on with in us as to which one is going to be in charge at any one point in time. When we give way to our lust then we sin and the Holy Spirit is grieved or quenched. The only way to give the Holy Spirit control again is but confessing the sin to God which is the exercise of I John 1:9. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If the Apostle Paul had this problem you can rest assure that we will! Romans 7:14-25 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. There are some that like to say, “they must have had a head belief and not a heart belief,” which is ridicules, man doesn’t reason with his blood pump. Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Have a great day, CDBJ |

3 | Here is where I'm puzzled | Luke 8:15 | Huron | 111825
I'm one hundred percent in agreement with everyone that says that God gives us a new heart when we are in Christ. (Ezekiel 36:26-27) Where I am puzzled is when I see these verses that say (apparently to me anyway) that these folks who received the Word did so BECAUSE their heart was different. To put it another way, it isn't saying that their heart was different AFTER they heard it (although it obviously would be), it appears that the heart in both of these examples was already open BEFORE they heard the Word. Regards, Huron |

Answering your question with another question is not precisely straightforward, but you'll remember the answer better this way. Who hardened Pharoah's heart in Exodus? Several times the text states "hardened," "was hard," etc. in regard to Pharaoh's heart. Who is the subject of the verb "hard-" in each of those passages where the context specifically mentions Pharaoh's heart? There is your answer. |

5 | Here is where I'm puzzled | Luke 8:15 | Rowdy | 111830
It might be instructive to insert at this moment the following quote from Apostle Paul: Rom 9:14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."[6] 16It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."[7] 18Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. 19One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?" 20But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' "[8] 21Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? 22What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath--prepared for destruction? 23What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory-- 24even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? This guidance from God's Word seems to go counter to the age-old position of His desire "that all men repent." The only conclusion I can come up with (and has been taught to me) is that God helps those who deceive themselves into their own world of self-deception. In other words, every time one lies to his conscience, it gets easier and easier because eventually our conscience gets burned out. Again, let me repeat one of God's main themes in His Word is the complete freedom of choice He gives in choosing to follow Him or His archfiend, the devil. If we choose the latter over and over again and again, knowing or at least suspecting everything is not quite right, God will help us get comfortable with that "not quite right." But if we earnestly and sincerely ask for God's guidance concerning His Word, then I believe He will re-activate our conscience and hopefully we should discover the true message behind that portion of scripture. Any response? God bless. |
