Hello daverobertsjr my friend in correspondance and brother in the Lord. You seem confused about Jesus' authority when you ask, "How could Jesus be critical of the tradition of washing hands before eating and then insinuate that the command of death should still be valid?" Firstly, Jesus was not critical of the washings of hands tradition, it was the scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, "Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread." So, you see? Jesus was not critical of that at all. Nor does our all-knowing Lord insinuate anything, ever. When you say Jesus insinuated that the command of death should still be valid, You may be guilty of placing your wisdom above God's, who is our Heavenly Father. I hope that it is a mere misunderstanding, and seeking for an answer. That would be a good thing. It is Matt 5:22 that says, "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." The sin of cursing parents is opposed to the duty of honouring them. I see this at the same level as calling them names. As Jesus did not condemn the adulterous woman, neither would He condemn a rebellious child for a sin of the tongue, at that point in time. But there will be an eternal judgement, which is what I believe the Lord is referring to in the verse that you questioned. Please understand, I am not knocking your question. I really desire to receive your questions so that any misunderstandings might possibly be cleared up. Blessings, keliy |

Dear Keliy, I am interested in your thought process that lead you to your following statement, "As Jesus did not condemn the adulterous woman, neither would He condemn a rebellious child for a sin of the tongue, at that point in time. But there will be an eternal judgement, which is what I believe the Lord is referring to in the verse that you questioned." My point in this is 1) This passage is not in some of the early manuscripts and 2) to develop a universal truth on this verse alone would be as some say a stretch. We simply don't know if a partial judgment might be imposed. We certainly know the golden rule to treat others as we want to be treated and there are many verses about the tongue and the problems it can cause when not controlled. So I really don't think we can say what God will do when His children sin. He may take them quickly to the holy woodshed. Just a thought. Val |
