Emmaus, to tell the truth, I admire your post carrying ID #53860, the post to which I am appending this note. It has all the elements of grace, intelligence and compassion that have come to be the noblesse oblige for your performance on the forum. You have presented cogent and impelling reasons for your view that the Gospels do indeed form the centerpiece, as it were, for the table of Scriptures to which we come to nourish our souls. Your presentation carries so much weight with me, in fact, that I find myself in agreement with you. And that's rather frightening of itself, that a Baptist would agree with a Catholic :-) But I say to myself, Well, if Christ is the focal point of all Scripture (and truly this is so), then it should follow in logical sequence, it seems to me, that the four accounts of the greatest life that was ever lived should be the supreme showcase of all Scripture. For it is the Gospels that tell us of the Advent, the virgin birth, the perfect life, the death on the cross, the burial and the glorious resurrection of our blessed Lord. Scripture that was written before this event points toward it. Scripture that was written after this event points back to it. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the very essence of our faith and our hope. All else is exposition. Yes, Immaus, clearly I see your point and for reasons I've attempted herein to outline, think it has considerable merit..... One more thought and this post is finished. I think we both of us, in suggesting the Gospels as Scriptures' centerpiece, have no intent whatever to denigrate the remaining books of the Bible, all of which are God's word and all profitable. --Hank

I don't have the time I'd like to give my full attention to this wonderful discussion. And have only briefly read all the responses. I will give further attention to them later. I also find it interesting that this conversation is still going. Could you please respond to this. As I believe Mac G. pointed out Paul's revelation was given to him directly by the Lord. I believe that the majority of it is about the Church, which is HIS BODY. Therefore Who we are IN CHRIST, Our eternal inheritence that we possess, And the Power displayed towards us (or what we can do)Eph 1:18-19, are only taught in the letters. Read Philemon 1:6 in the Amp. Therefore, without the knowledge of the WORK OF CHRIST on the Cross, you wouldn't know what Jesus had done for you. You'd only know he died and was resurrected. You would NOT know anything about the NEW COVENANT. You'd only know there was one. Furthermore, you'd be living the teachings of Jesus as HE LIVED THEM AND TAUGHT THEM. UNDER THE LAW. Therefore, according to the revelation that JESUS HIMSELF GAVE PAUL, you'd still be in your sins trying to be declared righteous. See Gal 2. In reality, you cannot be a successful Christian with the Gospels only. I NEVER said they were not important. To the contrary. I said they were. But to live successfully you must study WHAT THE DEATH BURIAL AND RESURRECTION MEANS TO YOU. And that is found in ROMANS THROUGH JUDE. I've even got a real life example for you. Here in Chile, they had a major revival at the turn of the century. The evangelical church FORBID the new believers to read ANYTHING but the Gospels. Guess what! They are ALL legalist churches. They are the deadest, most religous people you'd ever meet. They have NO idea who they are in Christ. And now I'm talking about the pastors. Can you imagine the sheep? No offense intended, but I don't know many catholics that are Born Again and walking in their rights as a believer. And they know all about the 4 gospels. Wish I had more time... |

In the Andes: Thank you for your input. Two comments: [1] The suggestion that the Gospels might be considered the spiritual equivalent to a table centerpiece doesn't diminish the vital importance of other parts of Scripture..... [2] The observation that "I don't know many Catholics that are born again" is one that, to my mind, is best left unsaid, because judgments of this sort fall well within the province of God alone. --Hank
