Bible Note: Emmaus, to tell the truth, I admire your post carrying ID #53860, the post to which I am appending this note. It has all the elements of grace, intelligence and compassion that have come to be the noblesse oblige for your performance on the forum. You have presented cogent and impelling reasons for your view that the Gospels do indeed form the centerpiece, as it were, for the table of Scriptures to which we come to nourish our souls. Your presentation carries so much weight with me, in fact, that I find myself in agreement with you. And that's rather frightening of itself, that a Baptist would agree with a Catholic :-) But I say to myself, Well, if Christ is the focal point of all Scripture (and truly this is so), then it should follow in logical sequence, it seems to me, that the four accounts of the greatest life that was ever lived should be the supreme showcase of all Scripture. For it is the Gospels that tell us of the Advent, the virgin birth, the perfect life, the death on the cross, the burial and the glorious resurrection of our blessed Lord. Scripture that was written before this event points toward it. Scripture that was written after this event points back to it. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the very essence of our faith and our hope. All else is exposition. Yes, Immaus, clearly I see your point and for reasons I've attempted herein to outline, think it has considerable merit..... One more thought and this post is finished. I think we both of us, in suggesting the Gospels as Scriptures' centerpiece, have no intent whatever to denigrate the remaining books of the Bible, all of which are God's word and all profitable. --Hank |
