1 | Bible's view on suicide? | Matt 27:5 | EdB | 125553
Angel Most Excellent! Again the question should not be, "can a person commit suicide and go to heaven?" It should be, "can a saved person commit suicide?" I say no. Committing suicide is basically saying God, Christ and the Holy Spirit are not enough, you have to take your own life to get yourself through what ever. Where is the faith? Where is the trust? Where is the reliance on Christ? It isn't present. Therefore I don't see the person say being saved. EdB |

Greetings EdB! In light of your statement that a Christian cannot commit suicide, I would ask, 'Can a Christian be mentally ill?' This is one of the areas that disturbs me about the approach many take concerning this topic. Most people do not simply wake up one day and say, "I think I'll defy God and kill myself"! Mental illnesses and chemical imbalances can do horrible things to a person's thinking. I am simply not prepared to make such a blanket statement about something that Scripture is silent. 3 | Bible's view on suicide? | Matt 27:5 | EdB | 125580
Tim Yes I believe mental illness can drive us to places we would never go on our own. However I think to blame all suicides on mental illness is just as wrong as blaming every other ill of society on mental illness. Since I'm not prone to murder, child abuse, or even suicide I can't imagine I would do any of those things unless I was mentally ill. However we know in our society there are people that place no premium on human life either their own or someone else's. Also we use mental illness to explain people’s actions we don’t agree with or understand, for instance I have relative that thinks I’m mentally ill for being a Christian. I’m sure there are instances of suicide where the person is not culpable because they were in fact out of their minds. However I find it equally hard to believe a rational person that was trusting in Christ would even consider suicide as an answer to their problem. I also have the question of being trapped in a burning building, would jumping possibly to your death be considered suicide when the only other option was to burn to death. I think since death is assured by doing nothing an attempt no matter how slim is just that an attempt not suicide. God is the final judge and non of us can really say how He is going to judge our actions. We have to keep our faith in Christ that He as our Mediator and High Priest will present us not as sinners guilty of sin but rather as joint heirs made righteous by His Blood. EdB |

Greetings EdB! That has been my point all along. This issue is simply too complex, and Scripture too silent to make broad and dogmatic statements about it. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

5 | Bible's view on suicide? | Matt 27:5 | EdB | 125594
Tim Your right but I certainly wouldn't tell someone there is a chance of getting into heaven by committing suicide. I would clearly say to a true Christian suicide is not an option. If I was consoling the loved one of someone that committed suicide I would say we do not know how God looked upon their situation and what all the circumstances were. We do know God is a just God and so we have to hope God in His mercy will admit them into heaven. I think anything else is presumptive and not ours to say. Let me say also and I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular especially you Tim. To those that want to say once saved always saved and no sin is unforgivable be careful the blood of those that followed your advice and went to hell may rest upon your head. I know that is a very harsh way of saying it, but scripture tells us we will account for every word we say. And I think before we start making suicide any kind of option even in a philosophical discussion such as this we need to understand people often are looking for agreement before they follow through with their plans. If putting that at someone’s feet bothers them then they might be wise remaining silent on issues of life and death. EdB |

Greetings EdB! I would counsel much as you just said as well my friend. And, I certainly don't believe in 'once saved, always saved' as my many posts indicate! :-) Nor, would I defend suicide. At the very least, it is robbing God of the right to minister through one's life to others. My concern was not to defend suicide as an option, but to defend against broad dogmatic statements that lack Scriptural support. While I would not advise someone to commit suicide, nor would I tell someone whose loved one had commited suicide that they are definitly now burning in Hell. Well, I've work to do now! I'll chat with you later my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
