1 | Is Catholic considered false religion? | Matt 15:6 | CDBJ | 71683 | ||
I do say that Mary was blessed because she was in fact the mother of the humanity of Jesus. I don’t say that she was the mother of God, because God had no mother. She was nothing more then a vehicle Through whom God worked to bring His Son into the world I wouldn’t say that she was lucky, she was blessed, and that being because she was used of God. She is even more blessed because she believed in her Son as to who he was and what he did for her. The fact is Jesus died for her sins the same as he did mine and he gave her eternal life the same as he did me only because she trusted and relied on him as her savior. If she hadn’t trusted in the finished work that her Son did on the cross do you think that she still would have eternal like just because she gave birth to Jesus? Did she earn or deserve to be chosen by God to give birth to His Son, other then the fact of her linage? She was chosen because of her relationship to King David, not because she was special, she had to be the one, that why the linage is depicted so carefully in the book of Luke not for her sake but so that Christ would be of the royal linage of his ancestral father David; Jesus is the emphasis not Mary! It a good thing people don’t know where the ground is that Moses stood on while viewing the burning bush if they did they would probably put is in a shrine or something and assume that it had mystical powers! Believers don’t need all that extra gobbledygook, Jesus is alive and He is all that is needed and he wants to have a living meaningful relationship with people. You like the man who is telling someone that eating stake and eggs, that the burnt toast he is eating is better. Believers have the best there is in the entire universe in the person of Jesus Christ what more can they be offered that they haven’t got. You can always say along with good old Frank, I Did IT My Way. Mary is definitely blessed but I don’t see her name in the following verses. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. |

"I don’t say that she was the mother of God, because God had no mother." I presume you agree with scripture when Elizabeth refers to Mary as "the mother of my Lord." What Lord was Elizabeth referring too? God is the answer. This is not a Catholic thing. Even Reformer Joe has defended this title on the forum. It is standard Christology for all Christians. It does not say Mary is the creator of God, only that God is her son and she is His mother because Jesus is God. Was God made flesh? Was True God and True man in the person of Jesus born of a woman in Bethlehem and laid in a manger or just some "humanity"? "You can always say along with good old Frank, I Did IT My Way." I never did say that, nor did I say that Jesus was not mary's Savior. Nor did Mary. In fact she said, "my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." You read a lot more into the title Mother of God than I do. Emmaus |

Good morning Emmaus, am I wrong in assuming that the Catholic Church teaches that Mary had sinless perfection? In your last post you stated, “It does not say Mary is the creator of God, only that God is her son and she is His mother because Jesus is God. Was God made flesh?” I think, for sake of clarity, that it says the Word became flesh. i.e. only the second person of the trinity not the whole God Head became flesh. Some things in the hypostatic union are hard to understand to say the least but it is my contention that we should try and not confuse the issue by the way we word things. Your contention, Mary is the mother of God, because Jesus was God. Case and point, tell me if you believe both of these statements? Thesis, Jesus died on the cross, Jesus was God; synopsis, did God died on the cross? CDBJ |

CDBJ, The official Catholic doctrine on Mary's sinless condition by virtuen of the merits of christ is this: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." Now for a few sources you may recognize as Reformers who held the same position: "Men have crowded all her glory into a single phrase: The Mother of God. No one can say anything greater of her, though he had as many tongues as there are leaves on the trees." From the Commentary (of Luther)on the Magnificat. ". . . she is rightly called not only the mother of the man, but also the Mother of God. . . . it is certain that Mary is the Mother of the real and true God." Ref: Sermon on John 14. 16: Luther's Works ( St. Louis, ed. Jaroslav, Pelican, Concordia. vol. 24. p. 107 "Christ our Savior was the real and natural fruit of Mary's virginal womb. . . . This was without the cooperation of a man, and she remained a virgin after that." REf: On the Gospel of St. John: Luther's Works, vol. 22. p. 23, ed. Jaroslav Pelican, Concordia, 1957 ". . . she is full of grace, proclaimed to be entirely without sin. . . . God's grace fills her with everything good and makes her devoid of all evil. . . . God is with her, meaning that all she did or left undone is divine and the action of God in her. Moreover, God guarded and protected her from all that might be hurtful to her." Ref: Luther's Works, American edition, vol. 43, p. 40 , ed. H. Lehmann, Fortress, 1968 Elizabeth called Mary Mother of the Lord, because the unity of the person in the two natures of Christ was such that she could have said that the mortal man engendered in the womb of Mary was at the same time the eternal God." " It cannot be denied that God in choosing and destining Mary to be the Mother of his Son, granted her the highest honor." Calvin "I firmly believe that Mary, according to the words of the gospel as a pure Virgin brought forth for us the Son of God and in childbirth and after childbirth forever remained a pure, intact Virgin." I think that we are both on the same page it’s just that your emphasis leans toward the human aspect of Jesus where as I lean more toward the divine aspect. I think that the key to the answer between what you believe and what I believe rest I what was spoken by Peter. I pay special attention to what Peter said with regards to how Christ was, because this is how Christ was going to build his church and I wanted to be a member of this church. Notice where Peter places the emphasis and I am sure that Peter knew that Jesus was the son of Mary. Matthew 16:16-17 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. [17] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Why didn’t Peter say that he, Christ, was the son of Mary, which is where most good Catholics would place the emphasis? |

cdbj, "Why didn’t Peter say that he, Christ, was the son of Mary, which is where most good Catholics would place the emphasis?" Beause Mary is nowhere in the context of Matt 16. Catholics don't put her there either. She is however in the context of Matt 1:23. I think your fear of Catholics' reverence for Mary is more exaggerated than our reverence. Emmaus |

You stated at the end of your post, “I think your fear of Catholics' reverence for Mary is more exaggerated than our reverence.” My answer to this is, I hope you are absolutely right on this point for your own sake! I only Know what my wife has told me from her past, as she spent 26 years as a Catholic 12 of which were spent in Catholic schools. She said that she never had the full assurance of her salvation until she completely believed in Christ and turned her life over to him. Up to that point in time in her life she said that she was always in fear of dying and only hoped the she had been good enough. I believed on Christ when I was 27 years old. Oh yes, I did believe that he existed, but I didn’t believe the way the Bible means that I should believe; until I started letting God the Holy Spirit reveal His Truth to me. When I gave up and turned my life over to Christ, that Bible virtually came alive to me, I can’t really explain what all happened but I knew that Jesus was right there with me and I felt like I could almost touch him. I started looking for a church to attend and looking for people that had experienced the same thing that I had found. I went back to the church that my parents use to take me to when I was younger. After talking to the minister of that church I realized that he wasn’t even saved and on the same track that I was so needless to say I looked elsewhere. My wife and I were both saved now and didn’t have a church where we could have fellowship and feed on the word. A friend who lived down the street invited us to a home Bible study; and I was shocked to find out that the man conducting the study knew Jesus the same way that I did. After the study I learned that he was a pastor of a church and when I ask him what the name of his church was he didn’t want to tell me because he said that that wasn’t his object in teaching the study. He said that all he was there for was to point people to faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. I finally wormed it out of him when I told him that my wife and I had been recently saved and we wanted a church that expounded on what it meant to really believe in Jesus. There is something within me, as a deep-seated concern, for all people that have a different view, other then that which is absolutely spelled out in Scripture. I think that Paul must have had the same sensation because of what he wrote in Romans. Romans 10:1-3 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. [2] For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. [3] For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Everyone on my wife’s side of the family is Roman Catholic and I mean with a big R and C, so maybe you see where I’m coming from. Something just struck me a funny; do you spend as much time and have as much fun interacting with Catholics as you do with “non Catholics”, as I am sure you would rather I call them? You are with out a doubt the most knowledgeable Catholic that I have ever run into. Most Catholics don’t know enough about the Bible to fill a thimble, and I am even including more then several priest that I have talked to in the past 37 years since I have fully trusted in Jesus. I guess I am like the poor blind man that Jesus gave sight to. John 9:25 B one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. CDBJ |

CDBJ Believe me I'm not defending Catholicism nor am I criticizing you. You say, “I only Know what my wife has told me from her past, as she spent 26 years as a Catholic 12 of which were spent in Catholic schools. She said that she never had the full assurance of her salvation until she completely believed in Christ and turned her life over to him. Up to that point in time in her life she said that she was always in fear of dying and only hoped the she had been good enough.” Trust me this is not a problem unique to the Catholic Church Protestant Churches are filled with people with the same fear. I’m more than moderately convinced that many that attend church, do so not because of a love for and desire to worship God, but rather believing that church attendance will gain them admittance to heaven. I once was shocked when J Vernon McGee said that less then 65 percent of the people attending church are truly saved. I then began surveying pastors for their opinion, most feel that the real number is less than 25 percent. America’s church are filled with people there for all the wrong reasons, being taught all the wrong stuff, but it is being done so spectacularly most think it is supernaturally. EdB |
