1 | Did Jesus ever drink wine? | Matt 11:19 | Morant61 | 215873 | ||
Greetings: There are many differing opinions on this topic. May I recommend two resources? One reference I found very helpful was from a rather surprising source. It is a book entitled, "Alcohol: The Beloved Enemy", by Jack Van Impe. It not only examines Scripture, but also history. The classic work though is a book entitled, "Bible Wines or Laws of Fermentation and Wines of the Ancients" by William Patton. If I remember correctly, he was part of the early temperance movement. The true value of his work is that he actually digs into the meanings of the words and doesn't just assume that anytime a word is translated 'wine' that it must refer to alcohol. :-) Enjoy! Dear Brother Tim, You said "The true value of his work is that he actually digs into the meanings of the words and doesn't just assume that anytime a word is translated 'wine' that it must refer to alcohol." Could you tell me what the definiation as you understand it is in this verse; the first of Jesus miracles. If you do not want to carry on this discussion Please let me know. These are my thoughts and if you do not want to discuss it please let me know. These are some things that bother me about the abstinence position. No where does the bible say do not drink wine. Period. If abstinence was what the bible intended I believe it would make that statement. The only conclusion I can draw from my studies is it definitely says do not get drunk. There is a big difference in abstinence and moderation. I believe the abstinence position is going beyond what scripture says. If a person is going to take the abstinence position why not take it from a cultural perspective rather than a biblical one. Many christians do not buy into the abstinence stance taken by many preachers and I believe this is what turns so many people off from going to church; getting beat over the head time after time about a subject that there is an ongoing debate in christianity about. It seems you as well as other preachers try to spin the fermentation, alcohol, words to try to make it seem that the verses do not say what they obviously say. What say you? Sister Val |
