AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 11:19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking [with others], and they say, 'Look! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews]!' Yet wisdom is justified and vindicated by her deeds [in the lives of those who respond to Me]." |
Bible Question:
Was it ever mentioned in the Bible that Jesus drank wine? I believe I remember reading that; where Jesus was telling the people that John the baptist never drank wine and He did but yet they condemn John the Baptist and they accept Him. Please help me somebody to either clear up that or to nullify that notion. Also is it OK to drink a glass of red wine with your meal? |
Bible Answer: Greetings: There are many differing opinions on this topic. May I recommend two resources? One reference I found very helpful was from a rather surprising source. It is a book entitled, "Alcohol: The Beloved Enemy", by Jack Van Impe. It not only examines Scripture, but also history. The classic work though is a book entitled, "Bible Wines or Laws of Fermentation and Wines of the Ancients" by William Patton. If I remember correctly, he was part of the early temperance movement. The true value of his work is that he actually digs into the meanings of the words and doesn't just assume that anytime a word is translated 'wine' that it must refer to alcohol. :-) Enjoy!
