Subject: Did Jesus ever drink wine? |
Bible Note: Greetings Val! I am back home my sister in Christ! :-) Allow me to briefly touch upon your questions. 1) Definitions: My concern here is that when we see the word 'wine' in a translation, it simply does not always refer to what we think of as 'wine'. There are about 20 different words in the Old and New Testaments that can be translated wine. Some of them refer to alcohol and some do not. The two books that I recommended do a good job of examining which words are used in each passage. 2) The first miracle: The word used in the first miracle of Jesus is a generic word that can refer to anything from alcohol to the grapes themselves. So, no one can be dogmatic about what the word means in John. We each will have to make some assumptions. 3) Drunkness: You are certainly correct that no where does the Bible explicitly say never to drink alcohol. However, no where does it explicitly command us to drink it either. :-) However, priests, kings, and nazarites were all forbidden to drink alcohol because of the danger of perverting judgment and because they were to be holy unto the Lord. We certainly agree that drunkenness is a sin, but at what point are you drunk? Does God go by state law? ;-) In my opinion, if I am wrong about alcohol and refuse to partake of it, it costs me nothing of any consequence. However, partaking opens me up to many serious consequences. Therefore, I personally choose to abstain. 4) Spin: In a couple of your posts to me, you see to be reading things into my position that I have never said or that you have heard from someone else. If I am guilty of 'spinning' something, would you please point it out to me! :-( I hope these brief responses address some of your questions my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
