1 | Does it take away sins or not? | Lev 16:34 | Bill Mc | 19829
Dear Sir Pent, Although I cannot gauge what Steve's true motives are, I can state what his conclusions are from his own posts. You state that you believe that he is seeking to get others to resolve an apparent contradiction between the OT and the NT. He states what his goal is in a related post: "Second, we are not free from the OT Law, just its punishment ... as already pointed out in other post." And he has stated in another recent post: "While some people want to categorize them..." (Here he is refering to the distinctions between the moral law, the ceremonial law, and the civil law embodied in the words 'the Law') "the Bible does not." Therefore, I feel that he is seeking to reinstate the Law as a means of justification and sanctification. The majority of the New Testament writings were written to demonstrate the neither Jew nor Gentile can be justified or sanctified by keeping the Law. We are justified and sanctified by Christ alone. To advance the view that "we are not free from the OT Law", when so much of the NT refutes this, is error. If one is going to be under the Law, one must be under ALL of it - moral, ceremonial, and civil. The Law is not an 'a la carte' where you can pick and choose what parts you want to keep. This is the point that I was making with my sarcasm. As long as Steve purports that we are all under OT law, I will not rescind my comments. I'm sorry, brother, that we cannot agree on this issue. But to try to put those under grace back under the Law from which Christ has set us free demonstrates that one does not truly understand the purpose of the Law or what Christ has done. In Christ, Bill Mc |

Continued admonition ........................... Dear Bill Mc, I understand your frustration due to this disagreement that you have with Steve regarding the continued authority of the Old Testament now that we are under the New Covenant. However, I think that you are missing the forrest for the trees in this particular case. I would like to share an example using myself. I disagree with Steve on his extremely strict definition of the word "worship". For instance, I don't think that he would classify singing praise songs to God as worship. Now let's assume that Steve posts a note on the verse where Moses falls prostrate before God at the burning bush in worship (this would I think fit Steve's definition). I could do one of two things. I could focus on the "tree" and post a response attacking his note and pointing out all the other kinds of ways to worship God. Or I could see the "forrest" and realize that there will probably be someone someday who will read that note about the burning bush and will be helped by it. This person may never even read any of Steve's other posts about worship, and that isn't the point of the burning bush thread anyway. Also if the person did read the other worship posts, they would also see my posts there giving the other side. In any case, it is not helpful at all to confuse things by being negative and not staying on topic. Now that of course is a hypothetical situation, but I hope that you can see that you have done the same thing. Steve just asked a question here about two specific verses that appeared to contradict each other. Yet instead of being helpful and answering the question, you were extremely sarcastic and went off topic to an issue that has been dealt with elsewhere. I hope that you will be able to see more of the "forrest" in the future. There are people who will read these notes that we will never know about. For their sake, let us show our Christianity by our love for each other. Let us always strive to be respectful in our posts. I have suggested several guidelines for respectful posting in another thread (Lockman Forum Improvements #2). You did not respond to that, and I would appreciate your input there. I do value your participation here in the forum, and consider you to be one of the leaders here. With great leadership comes great responsibility. |

3 | Does it take away sins or not? | Lev 16:34 | Bill Mc | 19846
Dear Sir Pent, Thanks for the admonition. I will go back and read your Forum Improvements #2 and respond to it. I, however, do not consider myself to be a leader here on this forum. I have been often reminded that, due to my lack of adherance to Calvanism or Armenianism principles, due to my ignorance of the original languages, due to my failure to worship at the feet of the revered church fathers, and the omission of ThD after my name, that I am just another sheep. That's fine. The only thing this sheep is trying to do is, hopefully, lead other sheep to the Shepherd, not the perceived 'Shepherd's crook.' We already have plenty of sheep and self-proclaimed shepherds doing that. Our greatest responsibility is to share the truth. Granted, this should be done in love, and I do endeavor to do so. But the heart of true love is concern for the other person's best interest, their soul, not just saying 'everyone's opinions are completely valid.' This is 'valid' in the sense of being the truth, not in the sense of whether they should be expressed or not. Everyone has the privelege here of free expression. And everyone here (including myself), must bear the consequence of having their expression challenged by the truth of God's Word. Thanks for the admonition. I will endeavor to see the forest more clearly. But, at the same time, I am not willing to sacrifice the truth of the one Tree (Vine) to do so. In Christ, Bill Mc |

Bill: Nothing wrong with having a Th.D. Nor with being familiar with the original languages (I sure wish I was more so). Nor with recognizing the contributions of the churth fathers and other Christian leaders who helped defend the Word of God against heresy (that's not worship, by the way, but respect). You are certainly not JUST another sheep, but the fact remains that God has used certain individuals in church history in a much more visible way than he has you or me. Don't despise theology, and don't blow off the work that Christ has done in his bride throughout the last 2000 years. While such men and women were not infallible, there is certainly a lot that we can learn from them. Secondly, while you do not label yourself a Calvinist or an Arminian, you must by necessity adhere to at leat some of the principles of one or the other. Let me show you an example: Do you believe that Christ's atonement was limited to a select, definite group of people (Calvinism) or to the entire human race (Arminianism)? Do you believe that God predestines individuals for glory based on his own wise counsel alone (Calvinism) or not (Arminianism)? Do you believe that God's saving grace changes the disposition in the human heart so that s/he will inevitably place faith in Christ (Calvinism) or do you believe God's grace merely enables man to freely accept or reject the offer of salvation (Arminianism)? Reject the labels, but it is impossible to reject both systems of theology, since there really is no third option on the points where they disagree. I understand the need not to be "boxed into" a stereoptyped category, but the fact is that categories are merely shorthand for more detailed explanations. --Joe! |

Actually, I've seen a 3rd option in print as editorials in Uplook magazine. Here are the URLs. http://www.gospelcom.net/uplook/magazine_uplook/viewarticle.phtml?id[equals]103 http://www.gospelcom.net/uplook/magazine_uplook/viewarticle.phtml?id[equals]118 Where you see [equals], put the equals sign (no spaces). Comments.................................. Greetings Steve! Thanks for the URLs! The articles were very interesting. However, I never did see a 3rd option listed. The articles dealt with the preceived weaknesses of each view, but never seemed to take a position. I was just curious as to whether or not I simply missed something! 7 | Does it take away sins or not? | Lev 16:34 | srbaegon | 19857
You're right, it wasn't plainly stated in the articles. The intent of the author was to demonstrate that the proper view of these issues is a middle ground. I know this because I've met his son (J. Boyd Nicholson, Jr) who pretty much follows the same path. Steve |

Question..................................... Greetings Steve! Thanks for the response! I must admit, though I take the opposite view from Joe, I would agree with him that there really isn't a middle ground. Therefore, would you mind providing a little more information about what the author perceives as being the middle ground? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

This is off topic .............................. Dear Tim, Steve, and Joe, I am deeply interested in the possiblility of a third view that somehow is a compromise between Calvinism and Arminianism. This would be a tremendous thread. However, it is not the topic of this thread. I would encourage one of you to start a seperate thread to discuss this idea. |

Personal Note ................................... Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to that thread, I think it could be really interesting. As for tickets, I don't have any to give. However, if you have any to a UK basketball game, and wanted to part with them for some reason ... :) |

Personal Note ................................ Dear Tim, Upon hearing that you're an IU fan, I have only two things to say. The first is that God is merciful, and if you repent he will gladly forgive you :) The second is that have you ever noticed that in paintings, Jesus is always wearing a blue and white outfit, and Satan is always wearing red. Just a coincidence, hmmmm ... |
