Bible Question:
Dear kalos, Thanks for the response but it was not an answer. Why? How do you know whether or not these TEACHERS are teaching the truth? Do we trust everyone who is a TEACHER? Do all TEACHERS teach the same? I think not. If I sat under Joe's teaching for a year and then sat under Tim's teaching for a year, how would I know which line of thinking is the truth? We all know that their are false TEACHERS amongst us (in the organized church). Not everyone who teaches, should be teaching. So how do you make the determination of who is 'given by God' and who is not? In Christ, Bill Mc |
Bible Answer: Support...................................... Greetings Bill! You are absolutely right! Not all teachers teach the truth. The only standard must be the Bible. This is why that I think debates like those over Calvinism and Arminianism are important. As you alluded to, one of us (Joe and I) must be wrong and one right! If you ask me, I'll tell you which one! :-) This is why I disagreed with the author of the web site you pointed us to. These two systems are mutually exclusive. Both cannot be correct! But, the answer is not to ignore the issues involved and say that you are neither. There is no middle ground. Either Christ died for all or only the elect. Either salvation is available for all or only the elect. Either God loves the world or only the elect. Either God desires all to be saved or only the elect. While we can debate politely, the debate allows people to look at Scripture and decide for themselves. Which side makes the most Scriptural case? Which side deals with the whole of Scripture more effectively? Which side is faithful to the context? The ultimate authority must be Scripture! But, that doesn't mean that we have to ignore the work of faithful preachers, teachers, and theologians who have dealt with these issues over the years. There really isn't anything new under the sun. The issues we struggle with today and the same issues the early church stuggled with. I don't believe that anyone has "any deeper knowledge" that is not attainable by anyone else. I do believe though that there are people who have spent their lives studying the Bible, languages, and cultures, and that we would do well to at least give them a hearing and compare what they have to say with what Scripture says.
