1 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | EdB | 113868
Sir Pent I think I see the flow of your question maybe better than when I first answered. In the Old Testament we see the Holy Spirit come upon men of God. He came down on them, was poured out on them, alighted on them, covered them, and was with them but we don't see that dwelled within them. In the New Testament we are told we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, that He dwells within us, we are infilled, or have an indwelling. Two different manifestations, one the Old Testament experience was for empowerment of a particular task. Whether that was to lead God's people, speak God's word, it was done under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The other the New Testament experience the Holy spirit comes as a companion, comforter, counselor, teacher, and master. His presence is permanent with us and He dwells within us. In both cases the Holy Spirit is given for God's service but in the New Testament He is also 'in' rather than 'on'. He becomes integral with us rather than just covering us. He empowers us in addition to working His power through us and for us. As to the timing, before the Holy Spirit could dwell within man, man had to be made holy. The Holy spirit will not dwell in an unholy vessel, before Jesus’ blood was poured out all men were in sin and therefore the Holy Spirit could/would not take residence within man. Therefore the answer to your question on the timing of the Holy Spirit I say the His timing was contingent on the salvation of man through Jesus Christ, which created the Holy vessel (temples) that were required for His inhabitance. Problem number 2............................ Hi EdB, The second problem that I have with your answer is that you said the Holy Spirit could not come "in" people who were not holy, and therefore, salvation through Christ had to come before the Holy Spirit could come "in". Doesn't that imply that the Holy Spirit has no problem coming "on" someone who is not holy. And also aren't you implying that no one was holy before Christ's sacrifice? Yet we know that there were people who were holy before Christ's sacrifice (2 Kings 4:9, Mark 6:20). Another post in this thread referred to Gal 4:1-10, which uses the categories of "sons" versus "servants". Perhaps instead of "holy people" you mean that the Holy Spirit can only come on "sons". |

Sir Pent You said Doesn't that imply that the Holy Spirit has no problem coming "on" someone who is not holy. And also aren't you implying that no one was holy before Christ's sacrifice? Yet we know that there were people who were holy before Christ's sacrifice (2 Kings 4:9, Mark 6:20). I don't think I implied anything. Righteousness comes to man one way, Jesus Christ. Absolutely a man can live for God before the Jesus but his holiness and righteousness was temporary established in the Law, each time he sinned he had to offer a sin offering to reestablish himself. Therefore the Holy Sprit only had temporary residence unlike today where He indwells us for eternity. Let's look at this is light of the whole Bible. Man was in close and intimate relationship with God. Man fell and man and God were separated. God came upon man to accomplish various tasks throughout the Old Testament whether "in" "on" or just "empowering" makes little difference God and man's relationship was still broken. The God sent His Son to die for our sins, man's relationship was reestablished and God dwells within us for eternity. Therefore the answer to the question on the timing of the Holy Spirit would be, it was predicated on the salvation of man through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. EdB |

4 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113994
My clarification 2........................................ Hi EdB, Here you seem to be saying that the Holy Spirit comes differently in the New Testament becuase we are permanently holy now after Jesus sacrifice. Yet in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit could only come on people temporarily because their holiness was temporary and always had to be renewed by animal sacrifices. I disagree. It seems that there are many places in the New Testament where it speaks of the need for even Christians to cleanse our hearts and confess our sins etc. This would indicate that although our cleansing comes repeatedly from the one sacrifice of Jesus instead of multiple sacrifice of animals, that we are not constantly holy, any more than they were in the Old Testament. Galations 4:1-10 seems to say that the difference between our relationship with God before and after Jesus is that we were servants and are now sons. So perhaps your answer of Jesus sacrifice is correct, but the affect of it is to make us sons, not to make us permanently holy. What do you think? |

5 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | EdB | 114007
Sir Pent We seem to be getting tangled up in definitions and implications. Let’s talk relationship. In the Old Testament, man and God were in a very different relationship than what we enjoy as New Testament believers. In the Old Testament God loved his people and used men and women chosen by Him to serve Him. In this service God empowered them through His Holy Spirit with the capabilities they needed to accomplish their task. In the New Testament our relationship with God is as Father child. God sends us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us to help us achieve all that we can along with doing His service. EdB |

6 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 114016
So we agree after all............................ Hi EdB, So it seems that we are in agreement here that the critical change between the Old and New Testaments (relating to the Holy Spirit's methods) is our relationship with God. This transition to becoming sons of God is what enabled the Holy Spirit to come in a new way. |
