1 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Makarios | 113708
Greetings my friend, The Holy Spirit was in no way 'silent' before He came at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13).. :-) He has been very active throughout the Old Testament: 1) The Spirit gave life to the creation (Psalm 104:30; Job 33:4) 2) The Spirit gave order to the creation (Isaiah 40:12; Job 26:13) 3) The Spirit gave adornment to the creation (Psalm 33:6; Job 26:13) 4) The Spirit gave preservation to the creation (Psalm 104:30) 5) The Spirit selectively indwelt certain people (Gen. 41:38; Num. 27:18; Dan. 4:8; 5:11-14; 6:3) 6) The Spirit 'came upon' many (Judges 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25; 1 Sam. 10:9-10; 16:13) 7) The Spirit filled some (Ex. 31:3; 35:31), even though His filling was not necessarily permanent (Ps. 51:11) 8) The Spirit gave enablement for service (Ex. 31:3; Judges 14:6) 9) The Spirit was a general restrainer of sin (Genesis 6:3) 10) The Spirit used the spoken word for revelation (Ex. 19:9) 11) The Spirit used dreams for revelation (Gen. 20; 31) 12) The Spirit used visions for revelation (Isaiah 6:1) 13) The Spirit used the written word for revelation (John 14:26; 1 Cor. 2:13) 14) The Spirit was the Author of revelation in the Old Testament (2 Sam. 23:2; Ezekiel 2:2; Micah 3:8) 15) The Spirit was the Author of the inspiration of the Old Testament (2 Sam. 23:2-3; 2 Tim. 3:16; Mark 12:36; Acts 1:16; 28:25; Hebrews 3:7; 10:15-16) In conclusion, I would say that the Holy Spirit was very active in God's dealings with man throughout the Old Testament. Blessings to you my friend, Makarios |

2 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Ray | 113842
Hi Makarios, This is indeed a very useful list. I think that many of the verses listed, however, speak of the spirit or breath rather than the Spirit Himself. I am most interested in "7) The Spirit filled some, even though His filling was not necessarily permanent." What did the Spirit fill them with? Also, Micah 3:8. Would you go with the NKJ or the NASB? From the heart, Ray |

3 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Makarios | 113846
Greetings Ray, I disagree: I don't believe that any of the verses that I cited speak of the spirit or breath rather than the Spirit Himself. Also, I believe that the Spirit filled people with Himself! :-) Let's see.. At Micah 3:8, both the NASB and the NKJV have 'Spirit' capitalized. So, I would say that I agree with them! Blessings to you my friend, Makarios |

4 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Ray | 113904
Hi Makarios, 1) "The Spirit gave life to the creation" -- or Job 33:4b, "...And the breath of the Almighty gives me life."? It appears to me that we have the Spirit and the spirit (or breath) in the same verse. Job 33:4, "The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life." John 6:63, KJ, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." It appears to me that words spoken and spirit given are connected. Psalm 104:29,30, "...Thou dost take away their spirit , [Or breath] , they expire, And return to their dust. 30 Thou dost send forth Thy Spirit [I would say spirit], [Or, breath, margin note in NASB], they are created; And Thou dost renew the face of the ground." 2) Job 26:13, "By His breath [Spirit, NKJ] the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent." Psalm 33:6, NKJ, "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth." It appears to me that there is a connection between the word and the breath or spirit. 3) "The Spirit filled some": Exodus 31:3, "And I have filled him with the Spirit [I would say spirit] of **God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship,..." 6 and in the heart of all who are skillful [Lit. wise of heart] I have put skill [Lit. wisdom], that they may make all that I have commanded you." Exodus 35:31, "And He has filled him with the Spirit [I would say spirit] of **God , in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship;" So I would say that they were filled with the spirit of wisdom, etc. and not with the Spirit Himself. Exodus 35:35, "He has filled them with skill [Lit. wisdom of heart] to perform every work of an engraver,..." Every verse in the Bible that has "filled with" I have in lower case. |
