Hi Sir Pent - sorry for the tardy reply, I've been away on vacation. In the OT, prophets of the Lord had the Holy Spirit "come upon" them for a specific purpose or a period of time. The Holy Spirit could be withdrawn. See David's plea in Ps 51:11 This Psalm attributes the cleasing to God, but note that the Old Covenant was powerless to permanently provide an attonement for sin. (Heb 10:4;19) Does the Lord live IN an unclean dwelling? (Note How the NT refers to believers as being IN CHRIST!)We have this treasure (Christ IN you and IN me - the hope of glory! Col 1: 27 ) in jars of clay . . . The Holy Spirit has been present all along, but it rested "upon" OT believers as opposed to the "indwelling" of NT believers. I have no other answer to your second question (why wait so long to send Jesus?) than, "in the fullness of time . . . " Gal 4:4 See also Deut 29:29. And aren't we so glad that He did come to ransom our hearts! Blessings, mommapbs |

I need clarification............................................. Hello Mommapbs, Thanks for your answer. I have been away as well. In your last post you said that in the Old Testament (OT) the Holy Spirit rested "upon" people, but in the New Testament (NT) it dwells "in" people. However, Gen 41:38, Num 27:18, Dan 4:8, 5:11-14, Ex 31:3, and Ex 35:31 all talk about the Holy Spirit being "in" people of the OT. Similarly, Rom 8:9-11, 1 Cor 3:16, Eph 2:22, Eph 3:16-17, 2 Tim 1:14, and James 4:5 all refer to the Holy Spirit dwelling "in" believers after Christ. And we know that the Holy Spirit came "on" the prophets of the OT, and also "on" the NT believers at Pentecost among other places. However, there is only one place in scripture that the Holy Spirit's method is referred to as "into our hearts". That place is Galations 4:6. So is the difference between the OT and NT method of the Holy Spirit acting in people lives really "on" and "in"? Or instead is it a difference of being "in" AND "on" in both the OT AND the NT, and being "into our hearts" only in the NT? What do you think? |

Sir Pent - yes the Holy Spirit permanently indwells NT believers. See John 14:11-17. With the Holy Spirit IN (see v 17) every NT believer permanently (v 16), the power of Christ is magnified throughout the world. Contrast this to the working of the Holy Spirit in the OT - His presence in or on those of God's choosing was limited and temporary. Well, this is what I read in Scripture. What is really bothering you about the presence or activity of the Holy Spirit? mommapbs |
