1 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113769
I need clarification......................................... Hi Ray, You seem to be saying something similar to Mommapbs. You are saying there is a difference in how the Holy Spirit was on the people in the Old Testament (coming upon) and how the Holy Spirit is in us now (indwelling). I would ask you a couple of questions. Why would the Holy Spirit come differently to the people in the Old Testament than He does to us? Why would God wait so long to send the Holy Spirit in the "indwelling" sense. |

Hi Sir Pent, I appreciate the questions and the impetus for further study. You made me get out my "eraser" for as you may know, I am doing my personal study (capitalizing and counting of pronouns) in pencil. We all in a sense are "working out our salvation" as we study and apply the word of God to our lives. 1) I would say that the Holy Spirit comes to the people in the Old Testament in the same way that He does to us. 2) I need a reference verse from you where it says that the Holy Spirit dwells in us. 3) Ephesians 3:14, "For this reason, I bow my knees before the (Father)." Ephesians 3:21, "to (Him) be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." Ephesians 3:14-19. We are strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Romans 8:11. His (Spirit) indwells us. Colossians 1:27, "...which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in (Christ)." Ephesians 4:6, "one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of (Christ's) gift." Ephesians 4:10, "He/ who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, that (He) might fill all things." From the heart, Ray |

Here's the verses you asked for................................. Hello again Ray, I am aware of your personal study on capitaliztion, although I must admit that I most of your posts on the subject are beyond me. Your dedication to your study is quite impressive though. As for the current topic, you mentioned a need for verses where the Holy Spirit dwells "in us". I would point you towards some that Makarios pointed me to. Gen 41:38, Num 27:18, Dan 4:8, 5:11-14, Ex 31:3, and Ex 35:31 all talk about the Holy Spirit being "in" people of the Old Testament. Rom 8:9-11, 1 Cor 3:16, Eph 2:22, Eph 3:16-17, 2 Tim 1:14, and James 4:5 all refer to the Holy Spirit dwelling "in" believers after Christ. |

4 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Ray | 114170
Hi Sir Pent, I wasn't thinking earlier of the Old Testament references. Thank you. The Ex 31:3 and Ex 35:31 I have in lower case "spirit' to be consistent with all the other "filled with the *holy *spirit" occurances to my mind. The New Testament verses reference do not talk of the Holy Spirt dwelling, but rather they talk of the Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ, His Spirit. The one that applies to the wording I am looking for is 2 Timothy 1:14 and also 1 Corinthians 6:19 that EdB gave me. 2 Timothy 1:14 to my mind is saying that the Holy Spirit who dwells in us guards the treasure, the words entrusted to us in the Scriptures. This treasure is the pledge, the down payment, the promise from the Holy Spirit of the holy spirit. Ephesians 1:13 talks about the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation and how after believing in Him you were sealed with the promised *holy *spirit. This holy spirit is given as a pledge of our inheritance. That is what we are told to be filled with; the word of God, the Scriptures. That is my understanding of being filled with the holy spirit. I go with the alternate reading in the NASB with my lower case spirit for James 4:5. "Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "The spirit which He has made to dwell in us jealously desires us". And for Joel 2:28 I interpret it as lower case spirit. "And it will come about after this That I will pour out My *spirit on all mankind;" That's the way I see it. From the heart, Ray |
