1 | Don't understand Jesus's view on alcohol | Prov 20:1 | Emmaus | 85280 | ||
Tim, Another point to consider is why new wine bursts old wine skins.The reason new wine bursts old wineskins is because new wine is fermenting and creating gases that stretch the old wineskins which have lost their flexibility and ability to stretch. Therefore the old wineskins burst, whereas new wineskins stretch and expand. Emmaus |

Greetings Emmaus! I'm beginning to word if anyone actually reads my posts! ;-) I have never denied that there was alcohol in the first century. I have never denied that some of the words translated as 'wine' always refer to an alcoholic beverage. My point has always been simply this: There about 11 words in the Old and New Testaments which are translated as 'wine'. Some of these words always refer to alcohol. Some of them never refer to alcohol. Some of them can be one or the other depending upon the context. One cannot simply read the English word 'wine' in a translation and safely assume that it is a reference to alcohol. Concerning the new wineskins, new wine was put into a new winesking to keep it from fermenting as long as possible. However, the wineskin could not keep it from fermenting forever. Eventually it would ferment. So, one did not put new wine into an old wineskin for two reasons. First, the old wineskin contained fermentation and would cause the new wine to ferment faster. Secondly, the old wineskin would burst under the pressure and ruin both the wine and the wineskin. Notice however that the wine was not put into the wineskin to make it ferment, but to keep it from fermenting for as long as possible. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

While reading in Jeremiah 9:25-26 it struck me that piercings or cutting made in the body are akin to the circumcision (an outward sign of God's possession) commanded for Israel. Satan always conterfiets the activity of God and this may be one of them. The practice of cutting the flesh seems to be cultural in many areas of the world, and yet perhaps it stems from a desire to measure up or to be approved . . . by the gods? By others? If this is the reason or motive for the "cutting" then it takes on a rebellious spirit - one that seeks approval apart from God. However, the circumcision of the heart is what the Lord requires! This "cutting" can only be accomplished by HIS HAND! And THIS is what we are to seek! As I consider my own ears, I remember as a 15 year old, I wanted them pierced, "because everyone else had them pierced." But, my mother said, "No." SO what did I do? I pierced them myself. The motive: To be like others. Rebellious, disobedient? YES (Do not learn the way of the nations, Jer 10:2) Today, 35 years later, I wouldn't wear good earrings unless they were of the pierced variety. The holes are good protection against loss. I don't regret the piercing, but I regret the circumstances and repent of my rebellion that it represents. God has used this to illustrate His truth - His approval is all that matters, the circumcision of my heart was wrought by the piercing of Jesus - the Author and Finisher of my faith. May this bless your day and encourage you in your relationship with the Lord, who loves you and gave Himself up for you! mommapbs |
