John R, I have much respect for your biting of the tongue. I have much respect for your knowledge on this subject. It was unfair of me to say some of the things I said. I apologize. I agree about your points on this verse, I didn't consider the text in its context. I know that we have many liberties as Christians. For instance the Bible says in Gen 1:29 "And God said, Behold! I have given you every herb seeding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree seeding seed; to you it shall be for food." But does this mean that we "should" eat every herb seeding seed which is upon the earth. Some plants and herbs can kill you easily if consumed. Im sure I have the liberty to have DRUGS from the doctors if NEED them. Or wine If I NEED it when Im older to dull the pain of my aching bones. Although I still beleive it's a sin to drink socially, I would in no way be affended by other Christians drinking. My "old" Church had drinking socials, which isnt good seeing half the congragation are EX-drug addicts, and drunkards. Plus what about the drunkards who come in that day. I just can't see condoning drinking any more than I would smoking the herb that God said I could have. Thanks for the Peace and Grace Matt |

Dear Matt, "Pot" or "herb" are not dealt with in Scripture, however, intoxication is strongly condemned throughout the Bible. Having had more experience with hallucigenic drugs than I care to remember, I can say from my own experience that one does not smoke a joint for the taste :-( . It is also true that the potency of unregulated drugs can vary widely. One may get merely a mild buzz on one joint or he may wind up in La-la Land (and I don't mean Los Angeles). As christians we are suject to the commands Of our King; Our Lord and God Jesus Christ. 1 Tim 3:2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, Given the qualifications,it is impossible for me to see a pot-head qualifying for the position of overseer. But that does not excuse the man in the pew either, for we are called to imitate the godly example of our leaders as they imitate Christ. Paul urged the Corinthians to "Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ (1 Cor 11:1). John |
